Publisher's Summary

Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick, takes us once more to the sea in the tragic, yet triumphant story of Billy Budd. A model merchant seaman, admired by crew and officers alike for his skill, masculine beauty, and noble nature, Billy Budd's life changes dramatically and irrevocably when he is impressed into the military.

Like many sailors in the late 18th century, Billy Budd is forced into service aboard a warship where life is ruthless and unforgiving. Amidst the accusations of inciting a mutiny and the harsh consequence of one impulsive act, Billy Budd must find the courage to remain strong and merciful, even while his life hangs in jeopardy.

Classic modern story, classically performed

To those who would balk at hearing a British accent telling an American writer’s tale, I politely remind you that the tale is set upon HMS Indomitable.

Good Narrator

This is one of the shorter readings of this book, but still a good one. The story itself is a sad one but requires reading for those who enjoy classics.

Excellent narration of a insightful parable

A lucid, erudite and insightful parable on law, justice, and the human condition. moreover because it's language and length are very accessible, this should be on every high school reading list.
