DON'T EXPECT ORDINARY ROMANCE expect EXTRAORDINARY

What did you love best about Black Lies?

What did I love best about Black Lies? IT KEPT ME GUESSING THE WHOLE WAY. At one point, I had a crazy thought, but Allessandra Torre's writing is *so good* with layers of STORY and misdirection that I thought, "Nope, that can't be it". It turned out, my guess was right BUT SHE WROTE IT SO MUCH BETTER THAN I COULD HAVE IMAGINED! There were parts that horrified me, kept me on the edge of my seat, and there were characters I wanted to distance myself from so badly I almost quit the book --- AND THEN --- what you are listening to isn't what you thought it was at all. The twists were awesome. And she wrapped it up so darn nice. That is a big problem for me with some books; the story is great, but if the ending is abrupt I feel like I've been having the ride of my life only to be thrown out of the car before I reach my destination. Really glad that wasn't an issue with this story. I love steamy romance along with Happily Ever Afters and this one delivers that too, yay! I had so much fun with this story, I bought the ebook too and had to go back and read parts going, "Yep, there's a clue, and there's a clue..." NICE!!

What other book might you compare Black Lies to and why?

I don't think I can recall a book quite like Black Lies. It has many elements of suspense but I've yet to find another author who can write erotic romance + HEA (where one of the characters isn't tragically killed off by the bad guy -- authors, you know who you are! ;) plus really nice suspense. And a truly original storyline. The more I think on this book, the more I am impressed.

What about Jessica Almasy’s performance did you like?

She was really good at differentiating voices. Her male voice for Brandt was my favorite. I wish she could have done the book all in that voice. At first, I was thrown off by her odd pacing in Layana's voice, where there were pauses where there shouldn't be and sort of strange emphasis' on some words where it wasn't called for but a few chapters in and I was accustomed. She read fast (I prefer narrators who speak as rapidly as I'd normally be able to read) which I loved very much, and she read clearly, didn't screech or scream (there is one narrator in particular that I fear did my ears permanent damage before I could rip out my earbuds - when the scenes call for a character to scream *it really isn't necessary to DO it, please have mercy on us listeners* Jessica Almasy could go from whisper to "shout" without any pain on the listener end - and her different male character voices were darn impressive

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES! But I played it while I was working and stretched it out into two sessions. But I wish I could have stayed up and skipped sleep. It was that good.

Any additional comments?

I wish there were more books to combine romantic erotica with real plot -- this was stellar for me because normally I get my book fixes in patterns: pick up a thriller, pick up a couple sweet romance, pick up a couple erotica books --- and none of these do much for crossover, until this book. I REALLY LIKED THAT! I want to go, "Aww! Sweet!" in the same book that I want to shout, "She DIDN'T!!!! That WITCH!" and "Get him out of there, HURRY!! Before they stab him again!"Hats off author! This was great!!

Horrible

The narrator’s voice is horrible. The story is horrible. It is only about sex nothing about romance.

Good book, okay narrator, horrible grammar

I just don't understand why an author with this many books can't afford an editor, or at the bare minimum, a proofreader. Just a few examples:
1. She uses "I" instead of "me." Example: ...looked at Brandt and I. This should be ...looked at Brandt and me, as in "someone looked at me" if you remove the other person. How hard is it to get this right, especially for a writer?
2. She says "in regards to" when she means "in regard to." As above, how hard is it to get this right?
3. She uses "I could care less" when she means "I couldn't care less." Again, how hard is this? Did A Torre attend a high school English class ever?
4. This one is more poor sentence structure, but one sentence in the book is "Brandt made it clear where his focus lied," His focus lied?

While it's hard to get past any of this and even focus on the book, it is a pretty good story. Unfortunately, either the author has done herself a disservice, or if she paid someone to publish this for her, they've done her a huge disservice.

I'm personally staying away from self-published authors at this point, as I'm extremely tired of paying good money for books that haven't been proofread, much less edited.

I love this author, but will check the narrator next time.

I've listened to several of Torre's books thus far and have enjoyed all of them. This is the first one with this narrator and I'm gritting my teeth trying to continue to listen to it. Her voice is annoying, the way she narrates is terrible. I won't buy anymore that she narrates.

Very explicit

Well, I love a good love story with twists and turns, secrets, etc. However, when I go for my daily walk (about 5 miles a day) and put on my headphones, it’s very unpleasant to hear very graphic, unattractive descriptions of the characters’ sexual interactions. I had read positive reviews for this book, so I finally started fast-forwarding the “yucky” stuff on my walk...waiting for the story to get better. I guess it FINALLY had some parts that were leading to answers, but the book was almost over before there was much real story. I stuck it out because of reviews. I wish I had exchanged it several “miles” ago. Also, narrator was terrible for my taste. Still don’t feel like such detailed descriptions of love scenes using very crude terminology makes a book great...just my opinion.

wow

Wow, what a great story! I did audio on this one and Jeasica Almsay did an excellent job narrating multiple POVs. I went in expecting this to be the usual love triangle, and it was anything but ordinary. Even when I thought I'd figured it out, I was surprised and satisfied with the ending. Black Lies is sexy, a touch suspenseful and totally engrossing. The characters kept me guessing. The story kept me guessing. And now I'm guessing this won't be my last Alessandra Torre read.

One of the best romance books I’ve read in awhile

It’s surprising, fun, heartbreaking, and don’t let anyone tell you anything about it. This love triangle will have you an emotional wreck because the audience has to figure out the mystery, but once you do, it makes the book even better. Quality writing, annoyingly perfect storytelling, and red hot romance.

Interesting

This was definitely interesting listen. I have started to love Alessandra Torre and her writing, and this definitely stood to my standards. As far as narrator and her performance, it just didn't pull me completely but than narration wasn't bad at all.
