Publisher's Summary

Winning by not competing! This international best seller upends traditional thinking with principles and tools to make the competition irrelevant.

In an audiobook that challenges everything you thought you knew, W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne assert that tomorrow's leading companies will succeed, not by battling their rivals for market share in the bloody "red ocean" of a shrinking profit pool, but by creating "blue oceans" of untapped new market spaces ripe for growth.

Based on a study of 150 strategic moves, spanning more than 100 years and 30 industries, they provide a systematic approach that every company can use to render rivals obsolete and unleash new demand:

  • Reconstruct market boundaries
  • Focus on the big picture
  • Reach beyond existing demand
  • Get the strategic sequence right
  • Overcome organizational hurdles
  • Build execution into strategy

    Critic Reviews

"Theirs is not the typical business management book's vague call to action; it is a precise, actionable plan for changing the way companies do business with one resounding piece of advice: swim for open waters." (Publishers Weekly)

    Interesting insights

Topics are simple but I would expect some direction coming out of the book. It is goes drilling down but then at the end leaves you a little lost.

    Good buy

Some of the matrices and tools are helpful. As had been reading lot of management books lately, this looked mostly repetitions of same points. However, Good book for novices.

A standard business book built on case studies

The SOP for writing business books appears to be: (a) take a 5-6 point theory, (b) look for 5-6 case studies that fit the theory, (c) offer no critique to the theory.

This book does it quite well. A lot of common sense with some interesting examples. Overall, these are the types of books to listen as audiobook as it is like hearing someone sharing their understanding.

If you can create, why compete?

Blue Ocean Strategy helps you understand importance of innovation by seeking customer value and focusing on demand rather than supply. Book helps you see the market place as a blue ocean with endless opportunities, up for grab with people who want to add value rather than competing in an ever shrinking lake. The book not only discuss the concept but also helps you with implementable tools to execute. Highly recommended for people in Strategy and Leadership role to create a trail for others to follow.
