Dan Abnett does it again

A unique space marines chapter gets a unique book written about them as we follow the leader of an elite squad of space marines through several deployments. Normally we only see a single mission in most 40k novels, while in this we get to see more of a "day in the life" take. And as a result, it makes for a very fast read/listen. And an entertaining one at that.

It has a "stylised" feel to it I can't fully explain. There came a point while listening to this where everything being described seemed like something out of a kick-@$$ Genndy Tartakovsky animation, which I then started to imagine, and that made it even more awesome. But the fact that Dan Abnett wrote this should be enough of a reason to check this book out.

My only complaint is that we don't get more of a feel for the entire squad, instead focusing more on their leader and their apothecary. This leads to the rest of the squad feeling somewhat samey, which is a little bit of a let down after Gaunt's Ghosts gave us such distinct characters, but it's not as egregious as other 40k books.

Masterful

Dan Abnett strikes gold yet again - introducing us to some of the most believable, endearing, and HUMAN space marines in the Warhammer World. Hard to believe this is his first time writing Space Marines!

Perfect for fans who prefer smaller squad-focused space marine novels. An excellent choice for Abnett fans. I love the Eisenhorn novels, but I think I actually like the Snakes even more!

Excellent read

I remember this being one of the first and one of the best 40k books I've read. I read it in paperback and it kept me through despite how much reading physical books hurts my eyes. I saw it on audible and I just had to have it. Reading through it for the 4th time years later has not diminished the quality of the story, and the narrator definitely helps to bring it to life.

The Best 40K Story

The best 40K story I've read. Many of the Space Marine stories are formulaic and tired, the Astartes acting more like petty, vengeful children than as the supreme warriors of Terra.
I prefer the Iron Snakes any day.

Abnett and Longworth always means greatness

a mix of different stories that all overlap , everything is tied in nicely. it's interesting and different from other novels , it follows the an entire career and rise of one marine

Dan the Master Abnett

If you haven’t read a book by this man, here is as good a place as any to start. Just like in the Eisenhorn novel “The Magos” he weaves a emotionally deep, plot thickening, skein so rich that you leave the book and immediately want to read it again or you are starved for another masterpiece to feast on. Dan Abnett is 40k :) get it read it!

Shallow waters

The story is a bit shallow and inconsistent with modern 40k lore, but there is plenty of warm humor and likable main characters, perfectly rendered by Mr. Longworth.

Good but some minor issues.

I liked everything, but the description of the girl and her situation at the start of the story was a little much.

Brilliant change but still authentic

As a modern day addict of 40k audiobooks. I can find some stories droll and shallow.

but this story is incredibly authentic. and is beautifully written. the character development is exceptional, the story is perfectly balanced with action and plot.

its refreshing to listen to how the battle plays out in enough detail that you understand how they fight and what they do rather than a general recounting of "they came, they smash, the conqueror"

Toby Longworth lives up to what we now expect of him. that is excellent and authentic performances that a perfect for the 40k universe.

Bravo! more please Dan!!

Very Good for 40k but below par for Abnett

Abnett is the best 40k author by some distance but the dry perfectionist world of the space marine is not where he flourishes. Ultimately still very listenable it doesn't reach the heights of his other work.

Probably the best 40k I've read

This was the first 40k book I bought and read, and it got me into the Warhammer 40k Universe.

Still an amazing read and I highly recommend it.

Awesome listening.

A very good story and it's nice to hear about the not so well known Chapters of space marines for a change.
These are a very interesting chapter with deep traditions and a structure based off the Ancient Greeks.

Highly recommend this book.

Loved it

There are some editing issues of word repeats but they are very few. Apart from this nitpick I simply loved it and in fact it made me so fascinated with the Iron Snakes that'll be making an army based on them for the tabletop game.

Will make you want to paint a chapter of them...

Hands down the best Spacemarine story I’ve heard so far. Great characters, a story that comes full circle and room for it to go further. The narration is superbly performed my Toby Longworth (loved him in Eisonhorn series).
I’m gonna build and paint me some Brothers of the Snake! 👍🏻

Best Space Marine book yet.

Abnett is a truly talented author who has a fantastic ability of being able to write and create stories in the 40k world which could be appreciated by many readers and listeners who are not fans of the lore.

Brothers of the Snake offered the most genuine insight into the mindset and trials of a Space Marine I’ve read thus far without falling into the stereotypical cheesey “FOR THE EMPERORRRRRRR!” Yelling, Bolter wielding heretic gore affair we are used to.

I can only hope Abnett continues to write something further on the journeys of the Iron Snakes.

A book any fantasy or sci fan fan will really enjoy.

Can not recommend highly enough.
