Wednesday, October 2, 2002.

Aspen Hill, Maryland. Northgate Plaza.

5:20 PM.

Inside Michael’s craft supply store, cashier Ann Chapman rings up another customer. Then it happens. A loud crack; a gust of wind; the light in register five goes dark.

Over the next 23 days, the entire DC area will be thrust into a reign of terror unprecedented in American history. Sniper attacks targeting and murdering everyday citizens will bring the entire region to its knees, as a nation still reeling from the recent attacks of 9/11 and the anthrax scare, are forced to confront a new type of brutal assault—this time in their own backyard. As law enforcement grapples with the mass carnage and chaos, media’s ravenous 24-hour cycle amplifies the very real fear, while steadily pumping new theories and bad leads onto a paralyzed public desperate for it all to end.

But who can stop it? And exactly how?

Call Me God is the never-before-told story of the fascinating and turbulent investigation that led to the diabolical and elusive killers' capture; one that pitted protocol against instinct, sacred institutions against individual insight. Told firsthand by those few who had the vision and expertise to solve it, and including a fascinating look into the behavioral, ballistic, forensic, and electronic analysis vital to cracking the case, FBI agent brothers Jim Clemente (former FBI behavioral profiler) and Tim Clemente (former FBI counter-terrorism expert) take us through every facet and flaw of a nationwide manhunt that pressure tested nearly every aspect of law enforcement capabilities—and its glaring vulnerabilities.

Anchored by harrowing accounts from victims, intimate conversations with family members of those deceased, as well as candid accounts from those who knew the perpetrators best, relive the haunting events of the DC Sniper attack and piece together a true crime phenomenon that's impact can still be felt today.

Great listening

Call me God was my first listening experience on Audible and it was certainly a great choice. The story is sad but exciting and engaging. Context is beautifully built, and you leave with a human sense of this inhuman tragedy. The narrator has a voice that compels you without using any unnecessary drama. Very good.

Realistic and fantastic

The whole journey was so cinematic, as well as realistic at the same time. All the people who worked to make this did a great great job. The plot was really amazing, but the narration filled it with life

A very honest and clear account

The narration by agent o connell is truly well done. There are places where I was confused with the sheer number of different names and characters which I felt could have been dealt with slightly better but overall a very touching and sincere effort to bring forth the stories of all the victims and their families and the tragedy of gun violence in the US which brought to life these monsters. May all the souls rest in peace.

call me God

lotl of details on the investigation. But dragged a bit since there were too many people interviewed and they go into their own stories which may be difficult to keep the attention on the main story line.

Intriguing!

I'd never enjoyed an audiobook as much as this. From the very beginning, I just wanted to know how it ends. Felt sympathy for Lee at times, but it doesn't justify his wrongdoings.

Gripping, moving and thought provoking

A very well told real life episode that is well told. The presentation which includes actual witnesses and people who lived this horrific event are brought live!

Gripping. Well narrated.

It’s horrifying, yet you can’t stop listening. The fact that it is a true story makes it even more gripping. The narrative is fast paced yet detailed and covers the events extensively. Inputs from different players in the story itself make it more appealing. I finished listening in two back to back marathon sessions. I would highly recommend listening to this.

A real life story recreated after 17 years

Truth is infallible. However to establish the evidence for the crime is extremely challenging. This story highlights the ingenuity of the training, rigorous hardwork and dedication of FBI, the difficulty in working with various govt agencies and the need for a holistic and integrated approach to crime investigation. Great effort has been put in sound recording, reproduction and editing. Kudos to tons of hardwork in tracking the crime investigators, witnesses and families of the aggrieved and recording their emotions.

tragic case - left me with questions

horrendous case , tricky to know what to write for review. for me it was informative, on a case I knew little about. I was left wondering about some of the errors ( in my opinion) made early on by Police / investigators , and wondering what has been learnt following this case. it was a massive case to fit into a docu- audio series. interesting series if you are interested in true crime cases. it is a heart breaking case however, and many lives were affected. this case does make reference to suggestion of abuse , familiar violence, religious ideology, and capital punishment. It may not be suitable for everyone.

Diversions aside, an unstoppable listen

Like others I remember this in the news. I never knew the back story and it’s a fascinating one. Some episodes are unnecessarily diversionary from the main subject and some questions aren’t even address (like why the killers gave the police the only clue that lead directly to their capture!) but overall this is an excellent listen.

Non Sensationalist Account

A murderous tale which does not glamorise the murderers. The victims are given full attention as are their families. The conclusions and editorial slant are in favour of the death penalty but the victim who disagreed is given voice as well. The images of the bereaved cheering as they watched a man tied down and killed was as chilling as the awful crimes he committed. Excellent series.

Fascinating

I remember the DC Sniper killings but I don't think I had comprehended quite how long the city was held hostage. Hearing first hand accounts from survivors, the loved ones of victims, police and FBI officers was extremely powerful and frequently heart breaking. To discover how the pair had ended up together, what drove them to commit such heinous crimes and other such facts was incredibly frustrating as maybe there were missed opportunities to stop them along the road they finally took. Both Jim and Tim Clemente came across as dedicated and brave officers. The heartbroken widows, widowers, siblings, parents, all the people left behind, who were courageous enough to speak, were dignified, honouring their departed, loved family members with their words and their testament that good will always defeat evil. Sadly, though we lost soldiers along the way, their eloquence in the face of such adversity can only be commended and admired. A well researched and well explained logical account of a terrible time in America's history. Highly recommended.

Great detail

Good description of full chase to catch the culprit. Wide variety of fbi, police snd witnesses speaking of their role / experience. Could have done it in fewer episodes though.

felt too dramatic

found some details to be dumbed down such as "the 223 rounds fragment, it depends on what tip you use for that, also the assumption it had to be a AR15 instead of any other .223 rifled firearm. I felt it was sim ppl fixed and made out to jerk peoples heart strings too much, i had just finished Golden State Killer and that had so much information, only a few emotional moments. mainly just the crime story.

Gripping and gave an incredible amount of detail

If you have someone in your life who is being stubbornly resistant to jumping on the audio entertainment bandwagon, this long form podcast/audio documentary might just pique their interest. Call me God is a gripping collection of transcripts, emergency calls, witness recollections and survivor testimonies that inform in a way that no two hour screen documentary ever could. Narrated with assurance by ex FBI Agent Maureen O’Connell, Call me God is one of the most tense listening experiences you can have with your earpods in. As events unfold, the Clementes relay what their own professional assessments were at the time, and include personal anecdotes of what that meant for people who lived in the area. One example of this was Tim Clemente’s wife and kids who pulled out of a service station minutes before another driver was shot behind them. True crime fans know the work of former FBI profiler and former New York city prosecutor Jim Clemente from the podcast ‘Real Crime Profile’, or perhaps as a writer/producer with the NBC crime drama ‘Criminal Minds’. Jim Clemente has impeccable credentials for this kind of audio documentary, and his own past professional involvement with the DC snipers case adds a whole new perceptive level to Call me God. Looking back through a more educated lens now in 2020, with the knowledge that many mass shootings have domestic abuse as the first or intended crime - surprise surprise, so did the shootings of 2002. Call me God collates from the first shooting victim right through to families witnessing the state sanctioned execution of the adult shooter. Giving voice to the victims, each shooting is life lost and possibilities severed. The families are given a chance to tell listeners what was taken from them and hearing this in their own voices is incredibly moving.

Behind the scenes and backstory explained

I was both enthralled and horrified by this story, I was well aware of the d.c snipers before this but there was so much more to it than I expected. Narration was spot on which was a pleasant surprise since it is told by the people involved.
