Celestial Bodies is set in the village of al-Awafi in Oman, where we encounter three sisters: Mayya, who marries Abdallah after a heartbreak; Asma, who marries from a sense of duty; and Khawla who rejects all offers while waiting for her beloved, who has emigrated to Canada. These three women and their families witness Oman evolve from a traditional, slave-owning society slowly redefining itself after the colonial era, to the crossroads of its complex present. Elegantly structured and taut, Celestial Bodies is a coiled spring of a novel, telling of Oman's coming-of-age through the prism of one family's losses and loves.©2019 Jokha Alharthi (P)2019 W. F. Initial few chapters left me slightly confused -- maybe because the story switches between the past and the present frequently. But once your mind gets the hang of it, you'll be completely engrossed in the story.

The story itself is beautiful. It sublimely captures the ups and downs in the lives of its characters, how they chart through the storms in their lives, and how their past never really abandons them. All this in the beautiful background of Oman.
The story specially highlights the difference in the thought process that comes with generational gap, likely a result of the exposure to more information, coming not just from nearby, but also from far far away.

Narration is apt for the story, although there were more than a few places where the recording was presumably corrected with another voice -- no complaints about it though.

Definitely recommend this book. 👍🏽
