Winner of Audiobook of the Year at the 2019 Audie Awards

Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut Children of Blood and Bone.

They killed my mother. They took our magic. They tried to bury us. Now we rise.

Zélie remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. When different clans ruled - Burners igniting flames, Tiders beckoning waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoning forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, anyone with powers was targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Only a few people remain with the power to use magic, and they must remain hidden.

Zélie is one such person. Now she has a chance to bring back magic to her people and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must learn to harness her powers and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where strange creatures prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to come to terms with the strength of her magic - and her growing feelings for an enemy.

The movie of Children of Blood and Bone is in development at Fox 2000/Temple Hill Productions with the incredible Karen Rosenfelt and Wyck Godfrey (Twilight, Maze Runner, The Fault in Our Stars) producing it.

A mind blowing fantacy

I loved the way the book is written from the perspective of 3 characters and my favourite is Amari who is soft hearted yet decisive. Zelli on the other hand is strong and courageous but she suffers through a lot.. Which is heart breaking for her and the way things happened around her making her life unfair, Magic redemption is the only thing which can do justice to her and I wish her to come back with the impeccable power. Inan is very complex character but yes i understood his effort to stop the fight and make things stable but yes sometimes you have to pick a side other wise you will always be alone.
The way book takes you to different scenes is amazing and I really loved the way this audio book has been recorded.. Bahni Turpin did a really great job and made us to feel for the characters and their emotions are very clear in her voice.
I am so excited for the next book and hope the same voice takes the audio.

I have not been much fan of fantacy but this book changed my perspective. 😍😍

Children of Blood and Bone

I am not an avid reader but I choose my sources of entertainment wisely. I am very pleased to have “read” this book (I used Audible). Frantic pace, terrific world-building, interesting character arcs and wonderful action-packed adventure. I was hooked and cannot wait for the sequels.

Very enjoyable

A very enjoyable story with good characters and a great performance by the narrator.
Like the vast majority of YA novels the romance was by far the weakest part of the story. The mc didn’t need a romantic interest and in my opinion would have been a stronger character without it. Reduced my rating by one star because of it.
Well worth the listen and now looking forward to the next in the series.

A Mesmerizing Story

This book about magic is magic itself. Tomi Adeyemi's gift is turning everything into mystery and force. I enjoyed every bit of it and I am looking forward to getting the next books in the trilogy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Tomi.
A special comment concerning the author's note at the end of the book: may God and humankind never allow genocide again--starting now! That note brought tears to my eyes.

Unforgettable

Many feelings awaken and burst out while listening to this incredible story of losses and encounters.
The world of Orisha is magical and the people in it become one with the reader and her voice. Bahni Turpin has become a favourite voice in my home. With the interpretation of Buhni and the words written by Tomi Adeyemi makes Children of Bone and Blood a book to keep home and in your heart.

Loved it

This is the only fantasy book I’ve ever read that is based on black people and culture. I absolutely loved it - I can picture the bravery and strength of Zaile, Zain and Amari. I would love to watch this on the big screen! Fantastic narration as well.

Great story but Yoruba Speaker please!

Great story. I really enjoyed the book but I can't understand why a Yoruba speaking person did not read the Yoruba parts of the book. I couldn't understand what Bahni was saying and this was very frustrating not to mention disruptive to the flow of the story. To get full applaud, please get a Yoruba speaker to read the Yoruba parts. Thank you.

Awesome and engaging book. The narrator did a brilliant job taking me on the journey. I only wish the Yoruba words were pronounced properly. Everything else was great

Wonderful story - horrible narrating

Children of blood and bone was such a captivating story. I thoroughly enjoyed listening and following all of the characters unfold. I can't wait to read the next book.
However, something has to be said for the narrating performance of this story. The entire story happens in West Africa, Nigeria to be exact. The gross mispronounciations of ALL Yoruba words in this book is unacceptable. A lot of the incantation parts of the book had by far lost its meanings. What annoys me most is that publishers would never let English words be bastardised in the same manner and still go ahead with production so why is it acceptable for our stories? Our culture?
Please for the next book, let the narrator get coaching for how to pronounce the words properly so as to better promote the culture and heritage being explored.

Incredible and stunning

A stunning story, characters, scenery... I felt like I was really there in Orisha. The world building and descriptions of magic are wonderful. I couldn’t stop listening. And the narration is just incredible, I have listened to a lot of audiobooks but the narration was the best I have ever heard, full of emotion and perfect for the story. I would recommend to any fantasy or YA fan. I just haven’t heard / read anything quite like it! Now I can’t wait for the second book 🙂

I am so disappointed in this already!!!

I have read this book and loved the story. the imagination and creativity splendid! I had such high hopes for the audible! no offence to the reader, but could you not find a west African to read it? a Yoruba to pronounce the names and places properly? and the persons that did the male voices. please someone fire them! the lack of effort put into this book took so much from the books essence. An American faking a Nigerian accent is always disappointing. and at times she even forgets to fake and reads as an American. Kill me please!

Wrong narrator for a nice story

I couldn’t get past the narrator’s accent and pronunciation of the Yoruba words. Surely they could have gotten a native Yoruba speaker to do the reading? The cringe-worthy pronunciation greatly detracted from my enjoyment of what was a very promising story. I hope they don’t make the same mistake with the movie.

Good book, BUT i’m trying to hold out till the end...

As a reader who absolutely loves books and stories based on African heritage and culture. I'm struggling a bit with this book. There's part in this book that is slightly sluggish and you almost want the scene to end FAST!

I feel this book has a great story, just a little dragged out in certain parts.

The mispronunciation of Yoruba words is also very extremely frustrating to hear. It's worthwhile this audiobook is re-record to really deliver the cultural context of this book and deliver it at its full capacity.

Amazing story. Not so amazing narration.

Loved the story. Shame about the narration. I'm Yoruba and I know the power in the language. Not having someone who understands the language and knows how to speak it took away from the full power of story for me which is a shame. Also the accent (not sure which part of Africa that was meant to be) the narrator used was appalling. I think in this day and age we can afford to use an actual Nigerian or West African? or at least someone who can speak with the right accent.

Journey to self

This book is intense. It's heavy, its thrilling, its eye opening and it's apologetic as Tomi Adeyemi merges the world black people live in today to that of the Maggi. Hope and loss and promise of triumph weaves in and out.
Zeile is a warrior in her own right but death, loss and roadblocks caused by prejudice just keeps heaping on and on every way she turns. The journey to bring magic back along with princess Amari whose blood is the same as the man who has left familes desolate and divided, is a challenge. There are triggers for some people but the story is well written and engaging. I loved very minute of it even as I wept and was too angry in parts

Children of Blood and Bone Review

Children of Blood and Bone by Toni Adeyemi has been a book that I have wished to read for the longest time, however put it off due the hype on book tube. However I wish I had read it sooner as I loved it so much I say how much I enjoyed it. I loved world the magic system and the plotline and the Characters. Honestly I just want more and cannot wait for the next book.

This is a must read.

For all adventurous children, but especially for all adventurous girls. We need more female saviours, more diversity, and more heroes of colour. This book has all of those things and is written and performed beautifully. This is on my list for birthday gifts for everyone this year.
