Publisher's Summary

The lessons our children teach us are the hardest ones. What do we do when our children don't pursue our hopes for them? In this riveting new novel, Danielle Steel explores how families can evolve and grow in unexpected ways.

A senior partner at a prestigious New York law firm, Kate Morgan couldn't be prouder of her three grown children. Tamara, Anthony, and Claire all went to great schools, chose wonderful career paths, and would have made their father proud. A single mother for years after the death of her husband, Kate keeps a tight rein on her family, her career, and even her own emotions, never once asking herself if she truly knows her children...or if her hopes for them are the right ones, and what they want. She is about to find out.

During one hectic summer in Manhattan, Kate's world turns upside down. One child has been keeping an astonishing secret while another confesses to an equally shocking truth. A wonderful match and picture-book wedding are traded for a relationship that shakes her to her core. A totally inappropriate love affair and an out-of-wedlock baby complete the chaos. Challenged as a mother and as a successful independent woman herself, Kate struggles to keep up with a dizzying and escalating chain of events, and begins to realize that she has a part to play in the chaos. Because Kate too has kept secrets from her children.

Sometimes the surprising choices our children make are the right ones...better than what we wanted for them. More often than not, parenting is about letting go of our dreams and embracing theirs.

DS

Typical DS. It did not have the typical shocker she usually has in her books. Great story.

Not my cup of tea

I really didn't care for the book. if it was not for the fact I like to finish what I've started then I would have put it down forever. I definately won't be reading this kind of book again but the person reading the book made it bearable and thank you for that.

loved it!

It caught my attention quickly and kept it. There were no parts that dragged. The ending left me happy and completed each character's story.

Same story - different author....

Widow....three adult kids....sitting the world on fire....until...
Spoiler Alert:
1. Widow sleeping with a senator for years. No commitment.
2. Son engaged to a drama queen who meet someone else who is not a debutante.
3. Oldest daughter comes out about being a lesbian and has been living with a partner for 7 years! They proceed to both get pregnant by artificial methods at the same time.
4. Youngest is a spoiled brat who becomes pregnant by a mega rich person and refuses to marry him and treats her family like dirt.
5. The "f" bomb was unnecessary and not typical of DS novels.

Not a fan of Dan Jon Miller...

Sorry I wasted a credit on this weak book by a usually good/great writer.

A story with a happy ending.

As a parent to adult children I could relate to this story of children who make major changes in their lives and as s a parent we have to adjust and love and support them.
I would recommend this book to all Danielle Steel fans.
I gave the 5 star ratings because overall it kept my interest, was a relatable story and I love Dan John Miller!

One of her recent best....

I really enjoyed this one. I listen to every DS book as it is published and she’s been even more prolific lately. Child’s Play is my favourite of the last dozen, Danielle Steel at her best and well worth a listen. Dan John Miller does an excellent narrating job as usual, and the plot is DS old school, well crafted, interesting and beautifully written. I absolutely loved it. I’ve had my feel good fix now, and the characters will stay with me for a while.
