Pleasantly surprised
Where does City of Bones rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I normally consume plenty of Sci-Fi so I wanted a little break into the fantasy, this book was a great choice. I've seen the trailer for the upcoming film and I thought I would read (hear) the book before the story was ruined. There is plenty of Teenage angst in this book and it did peeve me off a little to have to relieve some of uncomfortable days, but this was balanced with a good deal of action and a evolving and interesting back story. There is good potential here and I can see why a movie company would love to kick off a franchise here. Let's hope that they stay true to the story (Potter Style).
I want to recommend this book to readers (listeners) who like to stay within the vampire, werewolf, witch and warlock sort of genre. No reinventing here but a solid story line so far.

A great book as good as twilight
Overall the narrater is good, which has a huge influence on the book itself. The story line is easy to follow. You can almost visulise the demons flying through the air and the young characters battling to survive. Some aspects are similar to stephanie myers Twilight with a love story intermingled. In summary I really enjoyed the series.

Worth it
Would you consider the audio edition of City of Bones to be better than the print version?
No, I'd say the print version was better. I really didn't like the voices of Magnus Bane or Hodge, although Clary's was good. I also didn't like how Graynor pronounced herbs as 'erbs' and foyer 'foy-eh'. Other than that, performance was good.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Simon. I just like him.
What aspect of Ari Graynor’s performance would you have changed?
Pronunciation of herb, foyer, and Hodge and Magnus Bane's voices.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No comment because of spoilers

Yes but don't read yet!
If you’re skimming reviews to decide if this series is for you, you’re at the right spot. Yes this series is worth reading but read clock work Angel, inferno devices series first. If not for that series, I’m not sure I would have enjoyed the Mortal instruments series as much. I looked at this and wasn’t overly interested but after finishing The Infurno Devices was obliged to pick this up to answer some questions the other series left me with. How are Will and Jace related if they are at all? About to read city of glass book 3 and so far no regrets. Well used creds. It’s been a few months of entertaining listening and lots of good nights rest falling asleep to the adventures of Shadow Hunters and the downworld.

A great debut novel!
Would you consider the audio edition of City of Bones to be better than the print version?
I would not consider the audio better than the print version as the performance was a bit lacking.
What was one of the most memorable moments of City of Bones?
The fact that Valentine was able to convince Clary and Jace that they were brother and sister.
Did Ari Graynor do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
She could have done a better job. She would have been better off not trying to give the character's accents and just read the book naturally.

cracking read
Wow where do I start - this is a cracking read (or listen) Clary is just a normal teenager growing up in Brooklyn (so she thinks) until she starts seeing people she shouldn't (yes I know what your thinking there are so many books like this out there) but not like this one this is a totally new take - new world, new beings and a few old ones as well. Very very entertaining it kept me hooked all the way through Clary and Simons relationship is endearing and Clary and Jace's is totally complicated - please bring out the other two books City of Ashes and City of Glass - I have read these too but would love to have them on my mp3 player too. All in all a must have for anyone who likes fantasy/urban fantasy not just for young adults I am much older and have enjoyed every single moment.

Excellent Fantasy
I was looking for another saga based in a fantasy world that had a good mix of a story to tell but with intricate and complex relationships. With some similarities with series like Twilight and Wicked Lovely, this one has its own imaginative tale that weaves a story of magic and dark fantasy with the everyday feelings and emotions in the relationships of it's characters. Right to the very end it leaves you trying to guess what will happen, not only with the central plot but also between its two main characters Clary and Jace. I won't spoil that ending for you but it leaves you hungry for the next in the series...come on Audible don't keep us waiting City of Ashes PLEASE...

typical fantasy
A little predictable - some recogniseable themes...... Didn't like narrator's voice at all, and in some places I couldn't tell which character she was trying to be, but did get used to it after a few hours.
I'm a "mature" listener, but can't resist fantasy (loved the Twighlight series and A Discovery of Witches). Have just found I had to download book 2 in the series, despite myself.....so that must say something. It's hardly breaking new ground, or particularly well written (lots of cliches used), however it's typical escapist fantasy, and will help to pass a few hours on the train (or ironing!) pleasantly.

Beware all demons
Clary believes she is an ordinary girl until she witnesses a murder no one else can see, by teenagers invisible to everyone but her. She is drawn into the dark, mysterious world of the Shadowhunters, an organisation dedicated to protecting humans from demon kind, and in particular to Jace. I received this book as a Christmas present last year, and fell instantly in love with it. The characters are some of the most life-like I've ever come across. Jace, in particular is a fascinating character and ranks among my favourite heros. I defy anyone not to be charmed by him, no matter their age. The descriptive detail is just perfect. The story is original and gripping, with just the right amount of humour, sadness, romance and action, and the narration is spot on. This book begins what has quickly become one of my favourite series of all time.

A story world I am growing to love
The story follows the adventures of Clary Fray, who, while going about her average life stumbles into another world layered over our own mundane world. A world of demons and the demon infected, a world of angels and their partly human offspring; The Nephilim also known as The Shadow Hunters. Clary finds herself drawn to this darker world as events unfold she finds hidden truths about herself and her past that she'd never imagined. A fresh and engaging series that I'm really enjoying and would recommend it. I enjoy these supernatural, young adult series that are so popular theses days, but frankly many of them lack any 'real beef' to back up their characterisation, or plots, this book isn't one of them. The Mortal Instruments series is well written, it draws you into a world a world you wish to dwell a little longer in. As a stand alone title, it's worth a read, as part of a series it's a definite must read. The way the books are written each one complements the other, things written in one book blossom in another, trust me, once you've finished City of Bones you'll be itching to reach for City of Ashes.

Good story bad narrator
I stuck with this audiobook because the story interested me but I found the narrative hard to listen to. She got better as the story went on but in some places I couldn't tell which character she was supposed to be. I've downloaded the second audio book on the series though because it is read by a different narrator so hopefully will give the story the narrative that it needs. The story in general is worth sticking with and I look forward to seeing where these books go.

creative writing class reject
reads like a teenager has been to creative writing class and decided to rehash the few books she has read. Derivitive rubbish. too many similes, too many clichés. first book I could not finish in a long time. If you are over 25 and like to read for pleasure save your money - you will only be dissapointed!

I did not realise you adult meant young teen..
I really should have read the intro better. An interesting story line using a great deal from many other books of this genre and even a plot twist from Star Wars. The writing is young, much younger than say the Harry Potter Novels. I can see why it would appeal to younger readers. The threads of teenage angst, romance and rebellion are the plot with the supernatural thrown in to bind it all together.
There is evidence of research in the making of this world and this, being the first in a series, I assume that the writing will develop. The plot is a little involved with some nice charachter study though not overly developed in this intro the world. There is mystery, magic, monsters, treachery and a few as yet unexplained developments.
The reader was very suited to the story line, sounding suitably young and handling the narrative well with few errors and a nice flow. Her charachter voices were reasonably good, especially for the girls and her voice pleasant to listen to.
The main charachter is 15 years old and her supporting cast around the same age. I probably would not have purchased this book if I'd known that. It is part of a series that continues the story into the next book.
Overall, it's a little young and raw for me. I shall fulfill my fantasy/supernatural addiction elsewhere.

One of the best series of read/listened
This series is one of my favourites to reread and listen to.
This book was my first audible experience and I ended up listening to the whole series within my first month. Work, home, driving - I was hooked.
Shadow hunters is my go to series when I cannot decide what to listen to next and it’s enjoyable every time you dive back into the world this series has created.
If you have seen the movie or Netflix series then this book series is a must read as you are seriously missing out (but I still love both the movie and show for their interpretations).

Great story don’t like the narration
Love this story have listened to lots of Cassandra Clare books. She always has someone different narrating done really like this over the top American voice. Not enjoyable to listen :(

Story good, narrator dramatic
Story line is good, definitely a book for ‘young young’ adults as the main character behaves and think very young.
the narrator keeps on going up and down in the way she speaks which makes me have to adjust the volume quite often.

Enjoyable listen.
I enjoyed it.
The pace at which the narrator speaks is slow, so I increased it to 1.1/2.

Absolutely Amazing
I'd been meaning to read the Mortal Instrument series as I had fallen love with the Netflix series, Shadowhunters and wanted to fall in love all over again with the original works.
Being able to recollect and piece together the book with how the show was made and laid out, the similarities and differences between the two was really cool and made the experience a whole lot more memorable.
Reading it in the form of an audio book was the best decision I ever made. Huge compliments go to Ari for her amazing job at narrating this elaborate story and portraying each character perfectly.
Would recommend to anyone 100 times over 💕
