Survival can be a lonely existence...or not. The reality of the situation always comes down to a simple decision: What kind of world do you want to build?

The survivors have come to settle in the mountains of Wyoming, fighting day in and day out to establish a home for themselves in a near-empty world. Things are good at first; scavenging is a workable, short-term solution that seems to be providing all they need.

But they know that it’s only a matter of time before the food runs out. They need to scramble to find a sustainable solution before the clock stops, and for a little handful of people up in the mountains, the odds don’t seem very favorable.

Further south, a new band of people migrates across the map, running on fumes and searching desperately for a place to settle. All around them, as resources run thin, the world grows colder and more violent.

It’s getting worse out there, always getting worse, and it’s starting to look like survival might just depend on how violent they’re willing to get....

VERY GOOD!

These first two books are excellent!

Marine NCO staff Sergeant Gibbs - is a Master Gunnery Sergeant Fick clone (not a bad thing at ALL) from the "Michael Stephen Fuchs" Arisen series.
I do not laugh out loud often when listening to audiobooks but Master Gunnery Sergeant Fick and now Marine NCO staff Sergeant Gibbs have both accomplished this task on numerous occasions ...
chapter 18 'rang master' is a perfect example of when you will experience this ... when the sh!t birds picked up the M4 rifles without being given permission and Gibbs made them carry wooden sticks around 24/7 after telling them if he saw them at any point without them "I will jam my foot up both your asses and wear you around the valley like a pair of autistic f"_king flip flops" I laughed hard at that one and I am smiling just writing this ... I am also pleased to see the lack of naval special warfare operators (especially team 6 AKA DEV-GRU) or any other Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) high-speed spec-ops gun monkeys as that was getting old by 2016 even though I still see it (or should I say hear it) in titles from 2022/23.

I do not want to keep placing so much credence on reviews before I decide to listen to a title. One review of the first book complained about the ending being as flat and disappointing as fresh brown cardboard. But for Jake to fully develop as a character Billy had to die ...
So although we all speak English it is also clear that we do not always speak the same language!

The next best thing about "Joshua Gayou" is that after hearing "Mark Tufo" Zombie Fallout Books 1/18 and the aforementioned "Michael Stephen Fuchs" "Sean Liscom" D.J. Molles" etc ... It was refreshing to listen to another title in the SHTF genre that does not have zombies, vampires, and or werewolves that are the main protagonists. It is fairly conclusive that when we do enter this brave new world (and we will) it is 100% that we will be dealing with feral humans as adversaries and not vampires most of our day.
And if you do not think that the world of 2019 ended in 2021 then you have NOT been paying attention. I will let the more mature, astute, and well-informed of us fine tooth comb that one as I will personally leave it there. The fact is we are heading toward the Middle Ages technologically once there are not enough people to make the world of 2019 stay on the train tracks ... get used to it or get sliced and diced in the Darwinian filter of the early days/months.

If you were to split up the SHTF genre into subcategories then "Mark Tufos" Zombie Fallout would be in the entertainment section and "Joshua Gayou" would be in the educational section (although it is also entertaining).
I have learned so much from this genre since I was 30. Petrol is good for a year and then turns into gum that will block your filters and injectors without preservatives whereas diesel will last a decade or more if stored properly is a good place to start. The best PA weapons after all the gunpowder and brass are gone and a distant memory is another ... A good solid Kukri and Wakizashi, as well as your standard 5/6 " combat blade. The humble hatchet with a shield in your offhand is also a proven melee weapon combo ... just ask the Scandinavians.

I am looking forward to book 3 ...
