Publisher's Summary

An inspiring account of how a young boy went on to become the CEO of the world's greatest animation powerhouses, this audiobook is a must for managers, entrepreneurs and creatives alike.

As a young man, Ed Catmull had a dream: To make the world’s first computer-animated movie. He nurtured that dream first as a Ph.D. student at the University of Utah, where many computer science pioneers got their start, and then forged an early partnership with George Lucas that led, indirectly, to his founding Pixar with Steve Jobs and John Lasseter in 1986. Nine years later and against all odds, Toy Story was released, changing animation forever.

Since then, Pixar has dominated the world of animation, producing such beloved films as Monsters, Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Up, and WALL-E, which have gone on to set box-office records and garner twenty-seven Academy Awards. The joyousness of the storytelling, the inventive plots, the emotional authenticity: In some ways, Pixar movies are an object lesson in what creativity really is.

Now, in this book, Catmull reveals the ideals and techniques, honed over years, that have made Pixar so widely admired—and so profitable. Creativity, Inc. is a book for managers who want to lead their employees to new heights, a manual for anyone who strives for originality, and the first-ever, all-access trip into the nerve center of Pixar Animation Studios—into the story meetings, the postmortems, and the ‘Braintrust’ sessions where art is born. It is, at heart, a book about how to build and sustain a creative culture—but it is also, as Pixar co-founder and president Ed Catmull writes, ‘an expression of the ideas that I believe make the best in us possible'.

Good Insights

A guide to what makes the creative studio tick. Although the narration could have been better, it took the punch out of the book. I found it to be kind of a drawl rather than engaging.

Probably the best management book read thus far!

Creativity Inc is the story about the rise of Pixar. The management lessons delivered by the book are truly unique and inspiring. It is one thing to run an org based on hard assets and services and is totally another to run an org where revenues come from creativity. Hence the book is aptly titled Creativity Inc. History is replete with examples where a movie company delivered a classic and faded away. But there are very few that have been able to institutionalize the process of delivering success in creativity one project after the other. The later part of the book is very interesting where Ed talks about how Pixar's merger with Walt Disney helped Disney end its slumber of 16 years where it could not deliver a single successful movie. This is probably the only management book that I have read where the principles would hold good in guiding talent for individuals especially the millennial workforce. Too good a read!

One of the best books I've read!

You may not be the President of any company or managing anything big like how the author is in this case. But this book helps you mature your way of seeing problems.
So highly recommend it to anyone who wants to achieve good things in life.

Breaking the concrete

Pixar created something truly amazing.
Rising from a small "special effects" company to a world-class creative powerhouse, Pixar set a major milestone in the motion-picture history through persistent innovation and ... revamped the culture of corporate behemoths setting up ingenious organization and establishing powerful practices.
Yet nothing is really that "science-fiction" about their innovative approach and uniqueness.
What made Pixar and their people special was their ability and willingness to dive deep into our true human core and found what really make us tick.
They found keys to human "soul" and crafted meticulous instruction on how to use them.
Pixar's universal principals truly resonate with us and it is now obvious that no "concrete corporation" would have ever produced something as touching and as moving as Toy Story, Wall-e, Up! and all others.

Same as 20 years ago Toy Story shaped the world of this little kid buried in the old, oversized cinema seat...
This Story - the Pixar Story - will change the way we shape our businesses and organizations.

Thank you Ed for sharing this timeless lesson on how to have fun, create with passion and love what you do.
Thank you Steve for making this all happen.

A truly inspiring book, told from the heart. An amazing insight into an extremely interesting company that holds creativity and it’s people as its Core.

An amazing personal story and creative journey

Would you listen to Creativity Inc. again? Why?

I keep returning to this book for anecdotes on creativity, management tips and little pieces of history from inside one of the most creative businesses in the world.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Ed Catmull's personal recounts of relationships and dynamics of colleagues and employees paint a picture of someone who cares deeply about the people around him. This is reflected in his personal journey as he tells it and in the approach he demonstrated in running a creative business.

A wonderful book

At first I wasn't sure about listening to this - it felt odd to me to listen to a passionate autobiography being told by someone who has nothing to do with it. I kept thinking how this man saying all of these words doesn't feel this way - of course, you could say the same about any audio book performed by anyone but the author, but to listen to an autobiography told in the first person, from anyone but that first person was jarring. But only at first: as time went on, I sank into the story and such pedantic cynicism vanished from me, and I was able to enjoy the experience, wholly.

For fans of Pixar, it's an incredible listen, but it's also an inspiring and fascinating listen for everybody else. Definitely worth your time.

Great story!

I read this book not knowing much of the world of animation or its industry. I haven’t fact checked all that Ed Catmull said, but he gave very good advice on how to manage a successful team in a creative industry. He gave plenty of examples, and he never hide the fact that to reach a goal successfully you have to work hard. Sometimes it felt like he criticised people he encountered, but it’s probably his style of telling a story. I very much liked the finale and his tribute to Steve Jobs. I’d recommend it to anyone that manages a team or wants to start up their own company. The audiobook flows very nicely, even when you play it at 1.5x speed.

Best book I’ve ever read.. full of amazing insights and tips

I strive to read a book a week (if not a fortnight). This book has stopped me in my tracks. An absolute incredible company, career and legacy #edcatmull has created and lived. So inspiring with starting and leading an organisation and creativity tips, resilience lessons and top-down leadership and humility traits.

“By ignoring my fear, I learned that my fear was groundless. Over the years, I have met people who took what seemed to be the safer path and were the lesser for it... I had taken a risk and that risk had yielded the greatest reward. Always take a chance on better, even if it seems threatening.” Ed Catmull - Creativity Inc. President of Pixar
-
What I didn’t realise was how much of a role #stevejobs had in Pixar. It was a truly fascinating story. 25 years Steve had a huge role in Pixar, along with working on Next, Apple, and of course his battle with cancer. One of the best ‘Afterwords’ I’ve ever read on the real Steve Jobs.. very impactful.

Terrible narration - hard to finish.

Terrible narration. He is very slow, monotonous and dull which is surprising for a book about story telling and creativity. Listen on x1.5 speed to feel normal.

The story is OK at best, doesn’t engage the listener and does not leave you wanting more. It is non-linear, so there is little flow, and certainly no beginning/middle/end. It is really just a series of business solutions and boasts as to why Pixar is amazing. Hardly the kind of book you’d expect to read from the best story-tellers in the business.

Overall, one of my least favourite biographies. I’d recommend ‘Shoe-dog’ or ‘Losing my virginity’ way before this one!
