About this listen

Dara Shukoh - the emperor Shah Jahan's favourite son, and heir-apparent to the Mughal throne prior to being defeated by Aurangzib - has sometimes been portrayed as an effete prince, incompetent in military and administrative matters. But his tolerance towards other faiths, and the myths and anecdotes surrounding him, continue to fuel the popular imagination. Even today, over 350 years after his death, the debate rages on: if this 'good' Mughal had ascended the throne instead of his pugnacious younger brother, how would that have changed the course of Indian history?

Dara Shukoh: The Man Who Would Be King brings to life the story of this enigmatic Mughal prince. Rich in historical detail and psychological insight, it brilliantly recreates a bygone age and presents an empathetic and engaging portrait of the crown prince who was, in many ways, clearly ahead of his times.

This is a story which touched me. It showed the curiosity of Dara who craved Knowledge but was weak other worldly aspects. It shows the greed of Aurangzeb, who was ruthless and cruel yet a brave commander and shrewd diplomat. It shows the blood stained history of the Royal Mughal families fighting for succession, which shows one the shallowness for the desire of power and money. A lot to learn for this piece of history. It is like a sad romantic story with a painful end. May be that is why it doesn’t form part of our history since we only tend to live the happy endings. I wish the message of Dara can reach to many and this becomes a learning worth remembering!

Amen

A story which MUST be read and remembered

The book was well written but the best part was the narration where the narrator’s profound efforts can be seen.

Thank You

Amazing Narration

A really well written book about the Mughal History around the 1600’s. Dara Shukoh is indeed a forgotten character from those times. Well presented too by Siddhanta Pinto.

History writing at its best

This is a beautifully written book. Many of us know of Dara as the brother who was thrown out of power by Aurangzeb but not many know about who he was as a person. In the construct of the current world, may be he would have been a great influencer on social media or a podcaster / writer.

This is a well researched book but what I really liked was the writing. Quite poetic and nuanced. There isn't one boring moment in this book. The only grouse I have with this audible is that there are many technical glitches like echoes, reading mistakes by the narrator which haven't been edited out. But all in all a good listen!
