Publisher's Summary

A major new collection of essays by Ramachandra Guha, Democrats and Dissenters is a work of rigorous scholarship on topics of compelling contemporary interest, written with elegance and wit.

The audiobook covers a wide range of themes: from the varying national projects of India's neighbors to political debates within India itself, from the responsibilities of writers to the complex relationship between democracy and violence. It has essays critically assessing the work of Amartya Sen and Eric Hobsbawm, commentaries on the tragic predicament of tribals in India - who are, as Guha demonstrates, far worse off than Dalits or Muslims, yet get a fraction of the attention - and on the peculiar absence of a tradition of conservative intellectuals in India.

Each essay takes up an important topic or an influential intellectual, as a window to explore major political and cultural debates in India and the world. Democrats and Dissenters is widely read and even more widely discussed.

Expected better

Expected better from such a renowned historian, however the book covers historical facts correctly. Expected a better narrative in the 2nd part

A scholarly book

Talks about the cultural and pluralistic history of India as well as the various social and political issues contemporary India faces.

Though at times the left of centre slant of the author comes through, he seems to makes an honest attempt to be as objective as possible while assessing different controversial issues.

One topic that resonated with me was the varying interpretation of the word 'nationalism' and 'intellectual'. The author delves on the "absence of intellectuals in the conservative space".

Good narration by Pradeep Kumar.

Exceptional

Most of the Book is a revelation of lesser remembered intellectuals who shaped various aspects of India

Breaks down complex subjects into simple words

Liked the book and subjects it deals with. For instance can't be easy critiquing a nobel laureate while sharing the same ideological moorings. Needs an update seven years down the line all the same. India does have an adivasi president now, one of concerns mentioned in the chapter on tribals. For journalists, sociologists and historians or anyone interested in these areas the book would be of extreme interest. The narration is very good. But the poor editing of the spoken word, leads to much repetition and retakes which shouldn't have found its way to the final cut.
