**NOW A MAJOR PRIME TV SERIES STARRING ALAN RITCHSON**

Jack Reacher, adrift in the hellish heat of a Texas summer.

Looking for a lift through the vast empty landscape. A woman stops, and offers a ride. She is young, rich and beautiful.

But her husband's in jail. When he comes out, he's going to kill her.

Her family's hostile, she can't trust the cops, and the lawyers won't help. She is entangled in a web of lies and prejudice, hatred and murder.

Jack Reacher never could resist a lady in distress.

Although the Jack Reacher novels can be listened to in any order, Echo Burning is 5th in the series.

"Complete with crackling fast dialogue, an edgy ambivalent plot, and the capacity to make his readers turn the page, this feels like Child's breakthrough book into the mega-sellers. He is that good." (Daily Mail)

‘Jeff Harding’s [...] narration captures Reacher’s character perfectly [...] you have to savour every minute.’ The Sunday Times

Critic Reviews

In the space of less than five years, Child has established himself as one of Britain's most successful commercial novelists...Complete with crackling fast dialogue, an edgy ambivalent plot, and the capacity to make his readers turn the page, this feels like Child's breakthrough book into the mega-sellers. He is that good
Reacher is a hero in the old Wild West stle: a fearless and capable loner, who lives by his own set of morals and is proud never to have killed a man who didn't deserve it...The author is in complete control of his complicated plot and has produced another real pageturner
The British émigré Lee Child has become more American than the natives...A well-woven tale of dirt and duplicity with engaging characters...Child's character is a classic hero
If you like thrillers of the bang-wallop variety, with a nice bit of plotting thrown in, this is the one for you
Big, bruising actioner...Child's great strength lies in spelling out exactly how explosive things are made to happen...Cathartic stuff, expertly delivered
Gritty stuff with a high body count and intricate plotting that keeps the pages turning
A taut thriller by a British writer who handles the American suspense novel well'
Plenty of twists and plenty of excitement...another real page-turner

Echo Burning won't make many fans' list of the greatest Reacher novels, but it deserves far more credit than it often receives.

What struck me most was the atmosphere. The vast Texas landscape almost becomes a character in its own right, giving the story a sense of isolation and unease that lingers throughout. This isn't a novel driven by elaborate conspiracies or relentless action. Instead, it's a slower, more personal story centered on abuse, power, family dynamics, and the difficult choices people make when they feel trapped.

Reacher remains quintessentially Reacher—drifting into a stranger's life, sensing something isn't right, and refusing to walk away. Yet this time, the stakes feel more intimate than epic. Lee Child spends more time with the characters and their motivations, which makes the eventual confrontations more meaningful.

That said, the novel isn't without its flaws. Certain plot developments require a degree of suspension of disbelief, and there are stretches where the pacing loses momentum. Compared to the very best entries in the series, the mystery is less compelling and the villains less memorable.

But here's the thing: not every Reacher novel needs to be a blockbuster. Echo Burning succeeds because it tells a human story through the lens of a thriller. It is quieter, moodier, and more reflective than many of its counterparts.

As an audiobook, it's an easy and enjoyable listen. Not top-tier Reacher, but certainly not one to skip. For listeners who appreciate atmosphere, character, and a slower burn, Echo Burning offers a rewarding journey and another reminder of why Reacher remains such an enduring character.

A solid four-star listen—less explosive than some of the classics, but richer in character than it's often given credit for.

Loved the slow build of the storyline which was always one notch high on the anxiety or suspense meter! Loved the interwoven cinematographic write up!
