Publisher's Summary
A young swordsman must retrieve a magical blade—and learn the truth about his past—in this fantasy adventure set within the Arcane Ascension universe.
A young man lives among the trees of a primeval forest, raised by a wizened old sage and friend to the faeries and spirits of his home. He bears only half a name—Lien, an ancient word meaning "blade" or "edge"—and no knowledge of his heritage. As he grows, so too does his need for independence and answers. Thus, he begins his adventure, seeking a shattered sword and the truth behind the mysterious mark on his right hand.
To earn his freedom from his adoptive grandfather, Lien will seek to complete the trials of Anathema, a long-hidden weapon of devastating power. To succeed, he must master his own burgeoning power, learning swordplay and magic from fractured figments of ancient legends. Though his training will push him to the brink, failure comes at an even greater cost. For only with his talents fully forged will Lien stand a chance against his true foe: destiny itself.
Set within New York Times–bestselling author Andrew Rowe's Arcane Ascension universe, and inspired by Japanese manga and role-playing games, Edge of the Woods is the first volume of an epic new fantasy series perfect for fans of The Legend of Zelda.

Good New Character in an ever expanding world.
I like Edge. I really like Rowe’s world and magic systems. I’ve read every book. This felt a little underwhelming overall but a good setup to a new series. I would honestly have given it 3 stars however the sprinkling in of modern day political woke ideology in his latest books take what is supposed to be a blissful escape into a magical world and immediately kills my immersion. So I take a star off for that.

I think this will be my last Andrew Rowe book.
I'm tired of gender ideology being forced down my throat.
I love Nick Podel's narration. I love Andrew Rowe's magic system. The story would actually be better leaving the gender ideology paragraphs out. instead their hamfisted in adding real-world politics into what would otherwise be a great fantasy novel.

So good! I absolutely loved how it tied into the previous books! It was wonderful hearing more info! Edge is also great! How the book ended was so amazing! That last line was so good! I can't wait to listen to the next book!

Can't wait for the next
Andrew Rowe is probably one of my favorite authors, and this book is my new favorite of his. The narration by Nick is again top notch. This book really rewards readers who pay attention to the small detail. If you haven't read a book by Andrew Rowe I'd say this is a solid jumping on point.

Too much focus on mechanics, light on story
I love the universe Rowe is creating. The original storyline is great, but the Sacred Sword series is really fantastic. The "swordsman" had definitely become my favorite character in all these books.
Unfortunately, I really struggled through this story. Only Podehl's fantastic performance kept me going. There is so much explanation about all kinds of rules, and then more explanation about rules within rules within rules. "Let me give you an example" became one of my most hated phrases. I even found myself skipping ahead a few times just to get through it. I had to listen at 1.4x speed just to keep the story moving.
I truly love this character and desperately want to know more about him. It is a shame then that over the past few years, less actual story happens and more explanation about yet another rule is taking over. It's becoming too much.
Unless you really love this character as much as do I, you can skip this book (series?).
Andrew, please, please, please (my three fold plea) stop so much with the rules explanation, and give us more story! I really love how He Who Fights With Monsters had done this; it was pretty heavy on rules in book 1 and into 2, but it lightened up and focuses more on story with some tidbits of rules scattered about.

Wish I would’ve skipped this one
Fell in love with this authors work years ago and have listened to all of it. Wish I could go back and not have bought this. If you haven’t read his work yet go listen to arcane ascension. Andrew Rowe is a fantastic writer and capable of much better than this book.

Andrew Rowe has never written a bad book
This feels very much like an attempt to incorporate “How to defeat a demon king” into his new world which is cool. I can’t wait to read the sequel and see how it fits into the world as a whole

Interesting start not sure the best
Enjoyable listen but found myself losing track at parts as techniques and such described in too much detail. Interesting story though and performance as usual just excellent

Can't wait for more!!
While this book can be enjoyed as a standalone, it's even more enjoyable having previously read the other books in this world (Arcane Ascension; Weapons and Wielders; Broken Mirrors). It has its own style which sets it as different from other story's already explored but maintains diverse characters and easter eggs for the wider story. In particular I enjoyed learning about earlier magic systems. It has quickly risen to my second favourite (after AA) amongst the wider collection. Bonus points for being available as an audiobook upon release.
Narration is great and impressive that the main character's voice is still unique after the narrator voiced all the other books in the series.
