Publisher's Summary

Playing music should be as simple and natural as drawing a breath, yet most musicians are hindered by self-consciousness, apprehension, self-doubt, and stress. Before we can truly express our inner self, we must first learn to be at peace and overcome the distractions that can make performance difficult. Kenny's remarkable work deals directly with these hindrances, and presents ways to let our natural creative powers flow freely with minimal stress and effort.

Includes inspiring recordings of meditations designed to initiate positive thought. This book has become a favorite of many musicians who credit it with changing their lives!

"Effortless Mastery is a book that the world really needs. It was not written by a philosopher or an academic. Kenny Werner, is one of my favorite pianists I've ever had the pleasure of working with, and in my opinion one of the best pianists living on the planet. Kenny teaches that 'The joy of practicing is concentration. The joy of playing is liberation.' Effortless Mastery teaches the seeker how to achieve both at the highest levels. It also shows how to practice effectively, promoting real growth and how to play and perform free from fear and self-judgment. I highly recommend this book." (Quincy Jones)

Very Meh

I tried, but stopped enjoying this book halfway through. The premise of practicing your instrument free of stress and with minimal effort does have it's merit, but that could have easily been summed up in one chapter.

ENTIRELY too much woo woo meditation and positive affirmation filler for my taste. "Get calm and tell yourself that you're a master over and over" bleh

"Rereading via audio is like spiritual renewal"

I read this book in 2016 and as good as it was, the audiobook allowed me to do the exercises while listening and not having to drop the book and go back into the "space". If you are a serious musician, this book is a must read no matter what your level. After 50 years as a musician, composer and educator, listening to this has rejuvenated me and I have fallen in love with my guitar again. Playing from the "space" is the ultimate. The best 12 bucks you'll ever spend!

A treasure

This book will help you find the master that already exists inside you. This book will ask you to come to your practice and be Present. In this idea of being present, there is the problem of bringing so many judgements to the results of your playing that you become lost in thought and then don't actually have any mental/emotional/intellectual availability to receive the very expression/sound you are producing through your music/practice. Much like a conversation, you are not listening, instead filled with so much mental chatter/expectation/judgement that nothing is absorbed while practicing and nothing communicated while playing. Listening without judgement and expressing what wants to be expressed puts you in instant alignment with the universe. You'll know when it happens. Suddenly, you'll be watching yourself play and it'll be the hippest thing ever. This book will guide you to a more joyful playing and as well as practicing... Going to the root of any problem is the quickest solution. The root here is that you haven't accepted how you sound and what you can do. Not giving acceptance(appreciation) to your creation withholds from you your power to express your truth and your mastery.

"just believe you are good at music"

The whole premise of the book is that the difference between average musicians and great ones is that the great ones believe they are great.

The author himself even says he was good at piano at 9 years old without ever trying to be. This book is only for those who have already mastered music and feel limited by their insecurities.

if you do not already possess a great skill in musicianship this book will provide nothing. It is almost entirely a guided meditation reciting mantras that help to silence the inner critic.

I Am a Master; I Am Great

I Am a Master; I Am Great
I Am a Master; I Am Great

I Am a Master; I Am Great

As a beginner, I hope to come back to this book after one, five and ten years, and find renewal. Similar themes as found in Wooten's "The Music Lesson" but without the fantastic trappings.

A good practice to engage and repeat, just like meditation.

I’m going to try this more, after meditating and doing yoga for the last few years I want to incorporate this into my routine.

repetitive and condescending

This entire book could have been a medium length blog post. It goes on and on trying to drive home it's point, but it takes a lot of time to really get to the core. I felt like the author thought i was not only bad at playing my instrument but also at reading (listening) comprehension. i quit halfway through. I'll look for some effortless listening somewhere else, i guess.

Transcend the ego, play from a space of emptiness

This book reiterates a lot of eastern philosophies related to meditation and letting go of the need for validation. It has some good ideas related to music and some mediations to go along with it. Not necessarily the most in depth book but a nice short read to boost motivation to practise.

A fantastic boost for the soul

I want it thank the author for taking the time to write this book and also for recording it making it available here. The content is precise with soulful words that vibrate with the creative being inside. I have not only grown as a musician but also as human and spirit in my relation to myself and to life.

I take with me the act not to force but to get into a state of effortless mastery, of letting whatever wants to come through do that without my mind blocking the flow. Namaste🙏
