Termeh wordt geboren in Iran. Wanneer haar vader overlijdt, krijgt haar oom het voogdijschap over Termeh en haar zusje. Het eerste wat hij doet is met hun moeder trouwen, zonder dat ze er zelf van afweet. Als de twee zusjes door hun oom uitgehuwelijkt dreigen te worden, besluiten ze om samen met hun moeder het land te ontvluchten. Ondanks alle risico's. Als Mohamed tien jaar oud is, vlucht hij samen met zijn moeder, zusje en broertje uit zijn geboorteland, Syrië. De oorlog is al een tijdje gaande, maar het geweld komt steeds dichterbij. Wanneer ze zien hoe soldaten hun buurman uit zijn huis sleuren, is het duidelijk dat het te gevaarlijk is om nog langer te blijven.

Wat volgt is een reis naar het onbekende, vol obstakels en nieuwe indrukken. De beide verhalen van Termeh en Mo zijn geïnspireerd op waargebeurde verhalen van echte tieners.
