It was just a typical Monday. Until the big boss asked me to make the pitch for a prospective new client. After two years on shaky ground at work because of my screw up, an opportunity to impress the senior partners was just what I needed. Or so I thought, until I walked into the conference room and collided with the man I was supposed to pitch to. My coffee spilled, my files tumbled to the ground, and I almost lost my balance. And that was the good part of my day. Because the gorgeous man who crouched down and looked at me like he wanted to eat me alive was none other than my ex.

And did I tell you my family is a bit, well, traditional? Anyway, leave that. Zara and I broke up four years ago. She moved on. I didn't. I drank every night to forget her, I called, I messaged, and stalked her on social media. She just ignored me. However, that night, on the eve of her birthday, Zara messaged me. She called me over, like old times, to her hostel room 105.

the narrator is excellent but the scenes described in the book are pretty predictable which made it monotonous. however the abrupt ending is something that I was not prepared for. on completing the book there is this feeling of yes I have finished it too, nothing more. overall it makes something just above average literature.

Frustratingly bad read
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
It is incredibly difficult not to roll your eyes and exclaim "as if" when you listen to this book. The story line itself as an idea could be worked with. However characters are simply ridiculous. In a year 2011 it is simply impossible to be Ana. The language used in the book is also odd. So many repeats and the attempts at creating the funny lovable character - huge fail. All the internal personalities and their names.... Seriously who calls their internal ego “inner goddess"? I am amazed at a line up of very excited people who loved this book. I have pushed myself to finish it.
What could E. L. James have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
This book definitely needs more research done on the topic. Its needs deeper characters and more realistic set up. After all this is not a science fiction!
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Becca Battoe?
As a narator there was nothing wrong with Becca. Although her reading of male characters did make me laugh at times.

Mills and Boon with sex.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Just a string of cliches, shallow characters, no plot worth mentioning. One reads on to catch the raunchy although implausible sex scenes.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Envy by Sandra Brown
Would you be willing to try another one of Becca Battoe’s performances?
No, nice voice but her reading gives the wrong emphasis on words. She acts out too much and her portrayal of male voices is embarrassing.
Could you see Fifty Shades of Grey being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Not for TV. Sex is the only interesting part and that couldn't be done on TV.
Any additional comments?
Disappointing as the name held so much promise.

50 Shades of Crap
What would have made Fifty Shades of Grey better?
A plot! Less repetition. Anastasia may have been surprised by some events but the reader was not. If the sexual episodes were cut then the book would be about 2 hours listening. It was like coming up for air when the book eventually ended.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Certainly not the sequel to 50 shades of grey!
Have you listened to any of Becca Battoe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Becca did a splendid job with the material given. Can't shoot the messenger and she was really very good at bringing the book to life.
What character would you cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?
The inner goddess and the subconcious were soooo annoying. Between the IG high fiveing and the subconscious wagging finger and tapping her foot we are left with the vulnerable but worldly Anna, ready to try anything rather than remain a virgin, and "oh my" ,having multiple orgasms at every turn of the page.
Any additional comments?
E L James has stated that this trilogy is the result of her middle-aged fantasy. She's certainly tapped a vein and deserves all the accolades she receives; thanks to her readers.

Boring
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The content of this story was just so pathetic, I didn't even bother to listen to more than half an hour of it.
What was most disappointing about E. L. James’s story?
It was so predictable and silly. I did not find this book arousing. I bought this booking thinking it might be sexy, but was very dissapointed.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No, I think someone else could write a much sexier book than this.
Any additional comments?
I think it's time that a good author took up writing sexy books. There is obviously quite a lot of money to be made and people interested in reading this type of book.

What's all the hype about?
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
It depends on what you expect. I was reading this to find out what the fuss is all about & frankly I'm at a loss....the story is just ok but the writing is bad. Predictable plot, shallow characters & almost unbearable narrating make this an effort to finish. If you can turn your brain off you might enjoy it.
Has Fifty Shades of Grey turned you off from other books in this genre?
What genre is this in? I was expecting alot more with the references to "mummy porn". I can name books in completely different fields with hotter scenes. As for the so called romance...hmmmm, it almost fools you into thinking there is some.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Becca Battoe?
Doubtful. This narrator makes all the female characters sound like they belong on the 90s film 'Clueless', she mispronounces words as well as emphasising the wrong ones.
Do you think Fifty Shades of Grey needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes as it ends without being resolved & it's not that type of book....there are 2 more of course
Any additional comments?
I'm sure I'm not the only one to see the similarities to Twilight. It's so obvious at times that I found myself rolling my eyes in disbelief - one scene was practically word for word to a Twilight one! Overall it's good enough to finish & I enjoyed it for what it was but not in my list of favourites. I'm really not sure why this has been so hyped up.

Shoot Me!!
Would you try another book from E. L. James and/or Becca Battoe?
Never ever again..
What was most disappointing about E. L. James’s story?
Where do I even begin. I listened to about 2 hrs of the book and couldn't take it any more.
I know this book got lots of bad reviews but so did Diana Gaboldon's Highlander series.
I gave that a try and was hooked. Thought that this would be the same too.
God was I wrong.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The Narrator did her best, but you can't really do much for a crappy book.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
nothing at all.
Any additional comments?

OMG it is like, SO bad!!!
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
If you are a 20 year old girl who like, speaks, like, omg, you know in that teenage american way you may like it. As a nearly 40 year old it was embarrassing! If this girl blushes one more time or trips over falling on her face one more time I shall scream. It is a Mills and Boons for teenagers. Maybe it was just the narrators voice. Maybe reading the book would be better. I don't think so. The target audience is definately late teenagers early 20s.
Has Fifty Shades of Grey turned you off from other books in this genre?
If I had known it was a Mills and Boons genre I wouldn't have read it.
What didn’t you like about Becca Battoe’s performance?
Shocking. That is as a 40 year old. If I was 18 I would probably have loved it.
Any additional comments?
For anyone over the age of 22 don't waste your money.

Fifty shades of grey
What made the experience of listening to Fifty Shades of Grey the most enjoyable?
Becca's narration was superb.
What other book might you compare Fifty Shades of Grey to and why?
N/A
What does Becca Battoe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Becca brings the story to life. She does all the characters voices so well. Great job
If you could take any character from Fifty Shades of Grey out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Anna. She sounds like a really nice, easy going person. As long as Christian was in another country!

Over hyped and dreadfully narrated
I actually thought that this could be a "sexy" read..wrong! The narrator is "lolly pink schoolgirl" and totally annoying. Oh shucks did I say that (american drawl). The plot is so full of holes in the end I just wanted one to swallow me up. Sure, I persevered. I wanted to ge to the sex part like everyone else...including the characters. What an anticlimax!! Honestly, the media hype surrounding this book deserves a gold star for sensationalist crap.

Awful book made even worse by the narrator's voice
"Oh my!", thinking about writing this review, my eyes widened and I bit my lip, with my trousers hanging of my hips in 'that' why. It's so HOT!
*rolls eyes*
Except nothing about this book is hot at all. there are sex scenes, but I wouldn't call them erotic in the slightest.
If you haven't bought this yet, DON'T!! if you HAVE to read it, borrow it off of someone as it is a huge waste of money.
And definitely do not be tempted to buy this as an audiobook. The narrator's voice is TERRIBLE. If you have already bought it, try putting it on x1.5 speed to make it in any way bearable.

no no no
This book sounds great but the narrators voice is terrible, really irratating, which you wouldnt pick up on from the sample but as she has to repeat the same awful 'Oh My's' and 'Holy Sxxt's on average every couple of minutes it really goes through you.
Very dissapointed with the end which completely left me feeling a bit ripped off for the credit i'd wasted. I suppose its so that you will feel compelled to buy the next book but honestly it wasnt good enough to waste more credits.
worst book ive listened to.

Tripe
well i got drawn into the hype like so many others. it turned out to be one of the worst books i have bought. The characters lack credability, the storyline is weak and in places farcical. The dialogue reptative and listless. The sex scenes are written like a victorian dirty book and are also completley lacking in credability. This stupid woman does not appear to own any clothes, after four years ar university expresses amazement that she has her own email address and her strongest expression is 'oh my'. The man is not believable and creates neither pity or loathing, merely irritation. i won't put any more money into EL James's pocket nor more imprtantly waste hours of my life that i won't get back listening it.
And as for the narration, flat whiney voice, i only survived it by listening to the last half on double speed.
Its RUBBISH!

ABSOLUTELY DIABOLICAL READ
This must be the worst book I have ever read in my life. It has absolutely no storyline, no plot and just contains an oratory on sadomasochism. It was and is a complete waste of money/credit! I am totally disgusted and do not even wish to rate this book but it seems I must complete the 'rate this title' section to submit my review and, therefore, I will give 1 star, although I would not recommend anyone to purchase this book, even those who are into S&M as the content is diabolical and repetitive.

My god what an appalling bit of writing. It's just a mucky little book but read by a girl you just pray dies at the end of the book. It was a toss up which one of these two horrible people I wished would kick the bucket the most but I think the girl just edges it.
The narrator is rubbish and it's just comical when the dappy bird tries to sound like the dominant man telling her to bend over and grab her own ankles while he pops in the Chinese worry balls or whatever they were.
It really pains me that this is a trilogy. I think I might go sniff my walking boots just to try and snap my senses back into life after this truly awful book has turned my brain to tapioca.

Panties!
Oh My! what a victory for media hype! This book is a load of badly written 'panties'. No plot, shallow characters, primary level adjectives, ...even the supposed saucy bits are more cheap mayonnaise than tabasco. Don't waste your money.

Holy crap!
If you've read it or listened to it you'll understand the title. It's used with irritating frequency throughout. I thought the first part of the 3 would never end. I fought tirelessly to get through it, slipping in and out of consciousness. It is unbelievably boring, for a book surrounded by so much hype. To summarise, she wants a meaningful relationship with this rich guy. He just wants to shag and occasionally beat her. She’s not keen on the beating as it hurts and makes her cry. He is dead inside and has no emotions due to childhood trauma and gets off on beating a woman. Clearly they are incompatible. That’s it really. God only knows why it is so long and wholly crap.

Irritating rubbish
I tried to persevere with this book but couldn't. Badly written, with the most annoying central character imaginable, she may have come across a little better if she had been portrayed without the inane catchphrases...as for the erotic scenes, these were cringeworthy; I half expected a plumber with a handlebar moustache to turn up.

Didn't enjoy the narration
Would you consider the audio edition of Fifty Shades of Grey to be better than the print version?
No, I really found it hard to enjoy listening to this book. The book itself was alright, but I really didn't enjoy the narrator's performance.
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoy romances, so this book ticked that box for me.
Would you be willing to try another one of Becca Battoe’s performances?
Probably not
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No

worst audiobook i have ever heard!
reader has no expression, punctuation (speeds through entire paragraphs without even a pause ) and when she changes tone for characters it made me cringe. it was as if someone made this as a joke!
love the actual book but i got a chapter in to this audio book and literally cannot listen to anymore.

Well I've "read" it
Well now I know why women seem to love this and hate it.
Writing is rather amateur and I'm not sure I would have chosen the narrator but it was interesting

Unrealistic characters, repetitious, unsexy
What would have made Fifty Shades of Grey better?
more realistic characters, less perfection of the characters
Has Fifty Shades of Grey put you off other books in this genre?
yes
Would you be willing to try another one of Becca Battoe’s performances?
no, emphasis in wrong places.
What character would you cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?
all
Any additional comments?
just like a Mills & Boon meaning perfect characters: rich, beautiful, perfect but with more sex which was not exciting for me.
Also I think the male character is obsessive/possesive; and just because he is rich and handsome its ok. Cannot believe this book is popular.

Heavy on hype - light on substance
With all the hype about this book I assumed it would offer something. However after having listened to it I am disappointed (although in hindsight not surprised) - basic newsstand porn with a lot more words wrapped around it. One dimensional writing in respect to both the storyline and the characters.
However, I did listen to the whole book and I wont be seeking a refund. I have listened to a lot worse books (but not worse narration - it was just totally wrong for the book).
The book was not helped by the narration which was woeful. Surprisingly bimbo porn was not the best narrative style for this book. Presenting the book in a "darker" tone may have given the characters a bit more substance.
