Former soldier Anthony Swofford and violinist and conductor Gidon Kremer on this edition of Fresh Air. Anthony Swofford served in a U.S. Marine Corps Surveillance and Target Acquisition/Scout-Sniper platoon during the Gulf War. As such, he was on the frontline. He's written the new memoir, Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles. Swofford attended the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. He's currently a Michener-Copernicus Fellowship recipient. Gidon Kremer began studying violin at the age of four and later attended the Moscow Conservatory. Over the years he's been awarded the most prestigious violinist prizes including the Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow and the Paganini Competition in Genoa. He has more than one hundred recordings to his credit. His latest is Happy Birthday. In 1996, Kremer founded the Kremerata Baltica, a chamber orchestra to foster outstanding musicians from the three Baltic States - which has toured and recorded. (Broadcast Date: March 4, 2003)
