A Binge Listen

Totally riveting. The stories are amazing, and the presentation of each one is so, so masterful. Totally worth your time; your jaw will drop, and you'll spend each episode on the edge of your seat. Each story is told through the perspective of several people who were involved-- family, friends, neighbors, coaches etc, etc-- so you really feel like you're getting the full breadth of it. A couple of the episodes are pretty heavy, but the stories they tell are so, so important. It was just so good. I'll definitely be going back for a re-listen, A+++++

Top-notch storytelling

Gamebreaker with Keith Olbermann is a fantastic example of top-notch storytelling in the podcast format, which just happens to be about sports. The 10 episodes of the podcast's first season explore subjects as light-hearted as NHL enforcer John Scott and his once-joke, now-feel-good All-Star Game selection to one as serious as the Steubenville rape case, which is treated with an in-depth, three-episode examination. High-quality production and excellent narratives make the episodes a pleasure to listen to. The Gamebreaker staff have done a great job pulling from all over the sporting landscape, presenting stories that will be both familiar and unfamiliar to listeners. I sincerely hope that there is more to come from this promising program!

Wow! What a great listen!

I truly appreciate the work that went into this series. It is akin to the backstories you get of Olympic athletes. Various sports were from the perspective of the humans that play them. Lots of lessons to be learned here and inspiration to be had. Thank you so much for producing this and sharing it with your listeners

Great for American Sports Fans

This series is unapologetically American, which while no bad thing in itself, does mean that listeners have to have a decent knowledge of American sports culture and it's stars for some of the content to make sense. As an Englishwoman most of the sports stars in this series are people I'd never heard of and although I still found their stories interesting I felt I missed some of the "WoW" factor the makers were aiming for as I had no point of reference. It's an interesting series as although most episodes are autobiographical in nature it takes 3 episodes to explore a well known( even I'd heard of this story!) rape case perpetuated by 2 school Football players. Taken as a whole it feels a little like a bunch of sports guys sat round and told each other their favourite sporting stories which they then went and recorded - again not a bad thing at all! I enjoyed the series and would definitely recommend giving it a try - just be prepared not to recognise a single sports "star" if you are not American :)

Sometimes simplistic

I found the 3-part Steubenville story to be enormously one-sided. I left with no more understanding of what caused distrust in the police, or how the media referred to them as "promising athletes" rather than "convicted rapists", and so on. The conclusion is that "internet trolls caused harm and the town/law enforcement had no issues". So much is left out that it sounds like Disney villains descending on a small town. Seeing how they picked a side for that, rather than understanding the social issues and previous cases, left me hollow. What of the other stories I didn't see on the news - maybe the all-star NHL player has a side that isn't told? Or was the female boxer not always a victim? I've lost my trust in the series to tell the whole story, which unfortunately undermines the otherwise interesting stories.

Great story telling

I hadn't heard most of the stories here. Well put together and the combination of narrative and interview was just right. My favourite was the ice hockey episode but all were worth a listen. Great way to finish the series too.
