Critic Reviews

“Gentleman's Relish is a hugely enjoyable collection which proves that the short story is still very much alive.” ( The Daily Express)

Interesting enough

Patrick Gale has formidable talent along with granular insight into people - especially the British. Because the two Gale novels I read had powerful impact, Short stories seem too small a vessel for his ability.

Lacklustre

I found this a rather feeble set of well-written, but lacklustre stories. Each one had potential but had neither the development nor the bite to be satisfying. I am left wondering whether the author had been exploring some ideas, found they didn't take him anywhere - and then packaged them up as short stories. They are well read and kept my attention when on a long train journey, but I was hoping for something more of the standard of his excellent novels.
