Publisher's Summary

Remarkable talent threatens to cloud a life...The prophet Nehemiah's cousin has been catapulted into the center of the Persian court - working long hours, rubbing elbows with royalty, and becoming the queen’s favorite scribe. Not bad, for a woman living in a man’s world. But a devastating past has left Sarah believing that God doesn't love her and that her achievements are the measure of her worth - a measure she can never quite live up to. Darius Pasargadae is accustomed to having his way. A wealthy and admired aristocrat, the last thing he expects is an arranged marriage to the queen's scribe, an intelligent woman who scorns him. Can two such different people help one another overcome the idols that bind them?

I loved this book!!!

In whole! The characters, the story, most of all the God of this story. I laughed and cried and hoped and dreamed. I longed for the ending and dreaded it as I would miss my new found friends in this wonderful story.

Best inspirational author

Only Francine Rivers compares to the issues dealt with the symbolism and the use of Biblical context. Fantastic!

Worth reading/listening to...

The narration was excellent, easy to understand, easy on the ears. The production was also excellent. I did not have to adjust volume and or tenor throughout.

I enjoyed the story, its historic nature but most especially the description of spiritual and emotional struggle.

Tantalizing love story

Tantalizing Persian Jewish love story set in Nehemiah's era before the Jews return to Jerusalem to rebuild their city. One of the best narrators I've heard in Laural Merlington. And awesome weekend audiobook. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Narrator ruins the main character!

The narrator is a woman, which you think means that she would not be drawn to making a grown, female main character sound like a sniveling little wisp girl. The main character is a strong woman but all we hear is an a fake female voice from a female narrator! The story is so good I listened to the sequel, and got used to it but it still ruined crucial moments. For these two, just buy a real book and read it yourself.

Well Written and Narrated

First: The narrator in this Tessa Afshar book was really great, she conveyed the different voices without making the heroine sound whiny and overly timid, like in some other books. She sounded natural and not so forced. Although I don’t think I’ll ever get used to a romantic scene being read by a female’s ‘man’ voice 😂 Second: Great storyline and imagery! An enjoyable read/listen all around.

Exotic and Informative

To be able to learn about Jewish and Persian history in a novel that is filled with mystery and romance is a rare treat. I loved how Tessa infused Old Testament Scripture throughout the story as Sarah matured. I felt as if I grew right alongside.
