Gripping
Loved it, Vera's charactor development is good, narrator is great changing charactors voices, a good read.

Keeps you guessing
A bit of a slow story line and did not pick up as normally Ann Cleeves
Books do, but did keep you guessing till the end which was the good part of her books.

Weak ending ☹️
I love Vera but this tale was let down by a disappointing ending. One of those where you left thinking, “Really?”

My favourite Vera so far
I enjoyed this book. I found it less rambling than the first two and the narrator wasn't thrown so many different accents to attempt.
I enjoy Ann Cleeves' plots despite the fact that sometimes the story can be slow. I am looking forward to book 4.

Offensive language right from the very start made this unreadable for me. Just paid for it too - I shan’t be downloading any more Anne Cleeves novels

Thoroughly engrossing
This was my first experience of Vera Stanhope and I am now a fan! I enjoyed Vera's internal rather cynical dialogue, which really brought her character to life. As you would expect with Anne Cleeves, the story was well crafted and populated with believable characters who were interesting, if not always likeable. The multiple red herrings (some of which were very clever) were successful in misleading me - I had my money on an entirely different be suspect.
I have no doubt that I shall be reading or listening to other books in the series. I listened to this one which is well performed by Janine Birkett, who was able to differentiate between the various characters' voices. I particularly liked the way she performed Vera's part and also thought her children's voices, which can be difficult to make convincing, were successful.

First class entertainment.
With wonderful narration by Janine Birkett these Vera novels fairly crackle along. Stories to get lost in.
