Publisher's Summary

A hot summer on the Northumberland coast and Julie Armstrong arrives home from a night out to find her son strangled, laid out in a bath of water and covered with wildflowers.

This stylised murder scene has Inspector Vera Stanhope intrigued. But then another body is discovered in a rock pool, the corpse again strewn with flowers. Vera must work quickly to find this killer who is making art out of death.

As local residents are forced to share their deepest, darkest secrets, the killer watches, waits and plans to prepare another beautiful, watery grave....

Keeps you guessing

A bit of a slow story line and did not pick up as normally Ann Cleeves
Books do, but did keep you guessing till the end which was the good part of her books.

Thoroughly engrossing

This was my first experience of Vera Stanhope and I am now a fan! I enjoyed Vera's internal rather cynical dialogue, which really brought her character to life. As you would expect with Anne Cleeves, the story was well crafted and populated with believable characters who were interesting, if not always likeable. The multiple red herrings (some of which were very clever) were successful in misleading me - I had my money on an entirely different be suspect.

I have no doubt that I shall be reading or listening to other books in the series. I listened to this one which is well performed by Janine Birkett, who was able to differentiate between the various characters' voices. I particularly liked the way she performed Vera's part and also thought her children's voices, which can be difficult to make convincing, were successful.

Weak ending ☹️

I love Vera but this tale was let down by a disappointing ending. One of those where you left thinking, “Really?”

worth a listen

over all a good listen. interesting story line. enough description to paint a picture but not too much to bore. Narrration a bit dodgy especially when reading male parts, but believable nterpretation of Vera.

Slow

Slow and kept falling asleep. I’ve seen the tv show Vera and loved it but the books aren’t grabbing me.

Took ages to get going and by then I’d lost interest.

Not my favourite

I am enjoying the Vera books. I love a series and have caught a few of these on TV. The first couple of books were really good, dragged you in, played the long game. This one threw you straight into the ‘who dunnit’. Still it was better than a lot of police books!

Perfect narration

I love these books read by Janine Burkett
She brings the story to life.
The story starts with a murder so Vera features from the beginning.

story draws you in

Brilliant narration. Characters and plot draws you in. Fantastic detailed descriptions. Loses a bit in believability of motives.
