Story
Lord Nathaniel Harte, the disagreeable duke of Beswick, spends his days smashing porcelain, antagonizing his servants, and snarling at anyone who gets too close. With a ruined face like his, it's hard to like much about the world - especially smart-mouthed harpies (with lips better suited to kissing than speaking) who brave his castle with indecent proposals. But Lady Astrid Everleigh will stop at nothing to see her younger sister safe from a notorious scoundrel, even if it means offering herself up on a silver platter to the forbidding Beast of Beswick himself.

Publisher's Summary
The vivid scar that spans Sir Iain MacLagan's cheek is a daily reminder of the wife he lost - and of the enemy that still stalks him. Commanded by Scotland's king to remarry in order to unite two powerful border clans, lain reluctantly weds Islaen MacRoth, a woman whose delicate appearance belies a playful, seductive nature that proves dangerously attractive to a man who has vowed never to jeopardize his heart, or his loved ones, again...
Raised with eleven boisterous brothers, Islaen has little time for foolish romantic notions. Even so, she hoped for more than a forced marriage to a man who shares her bed, but not her life. Step by step, Islaen sets out to wear down Iain's defenses.

Not Hannah's Best......3-1/2 Stars.
This book is one of Hannah Howell's early books and it shows in the writing. It does have some sensual or sexual tension between the main characters but it doesn't seem as strongly developed as in her later books.
I enjoy books that have characters with flaws and Islaen and Iain definitely have issues, one of which takes manipulation to resolve. Islean has low self-esteem with very little "backbone" and Iain suffers with deep fear which manifests into him looking like a jerk most of the time. Together they learn, become closer, and develop a strong bond.
No, this book is not the most spectacular story but it is not a total disaster either. I still found this book to be likable in many areas so I would still give this book 3-1/2 stars. Its an even better listen if you wait and get it on sale!!

Highland Wedding
Islaen MacRoth has been taken to court to find a groom. Her father and several of her brothers are there to make sure she is not married to someone who will hurt her. When she spies Sir Iain MacLagan she is smitten. Her dreams of him, even with the scar on his face, grows no bound. He is not looking for a wife. His first died in childbirth and he is through with marriage. But with the shrewd eyes of the king he is commanded to marry her. Now the young lass has her hands full trying to get him to love her. But with his ex love, not lover, and a crazy idiot, and court full of intrigue will either of them survive long enough to see the true worth of the other? I read this years ago and found it again. Listening to it was a joy.

Not good.
The overall story may or maybe not good. I have only listened to a few paragraphs. The narrative was like listening to a robot. Even visitors to me commented how could I listen to it. Think I might try to find the book to read Sorry for the poor feedback.

Good book nicely narrated.
I quite enjoyed plain and correctly pronounced words narration of this emotional story. Although the male protagonist was annoyingly stubborn, I guess that's part of the unfolding drama.

A lovely story, a little out of the ordinary
I really enjoyed this story as it did not follow the usual formula, but examined the difficulties faced after the ‘boy got the girl’. It was also great in that I was not able to pick what would happen next as you often can in less beautifully crafted works of fiction, and I enjoyed the surprises that lived along with the everyday of the novel, as they do in the real world though obviously less intensely!!! I was initially put off the reviews of Ashford McNab’s performance, and these are to some degree valid, but I felt that as she progressed with the reading she seemed to settle into it more (or I became accustomed to her reading), and the story took over and more than compensated for any wants in the performance. I would most definitely recommend this book!
