Publisher's Summary

Stanley Yelnats' family has a history of bad luck, so when a miscarriage of justice sends him to Camp Green Lake Juvenile Detention Centre (which isn't green and doesn't have a lake), he is not surprised.

Every day he and the other inmates are told to dig a hole, five feet wide by five feet deep, reporting anything they find. The evil warden claims that it is character building, but this is a lie, and Stanley must dig up the truth.

Wonderfully inventive, compelling and hilarious, Louis Sachar has created a masterpiece.

Critic Reviews

" Holes is one of those instant classics that adults, as well as children over eight, will thoroughly enjoy. Sachar has created something quite different from JK Rowling or Philip Pullman, but no less enchanting." ( Independent on Sunday)
"If you want a witty, moving listen that grabs you and never lets up, look no further than Holes." ( The Daily Telegraph)

Fabulous Feel-Good Literature

One of the best stories I've come across in a long time. Sachar makes you fall in love with his beautiful narrative which will stay with you for a long time. "Holes" is the epitome of what youth literature should be -- something to be loved by children of all ages. Like everything on Audible, the reading is superb. Often too little is made of this, but the outstanding quality of the productions and the skill of the actors doing the reading really stand to Audible's credit.

I couldn't stop listening to this book. it's amazing. The story is so effortlessly good, it's like the author is showing off. I will definitely listen again and so should you.

Holes is great, people are just mean

A very enjoyable, heartwarming and funny story that really does blow your mind on some occasions, the characters are well realised and prove to be compelling. I enjoyed the non-linear narrative and the interwoven plot lines which really prompted some thought provoking questions, the narrator's voice was also pleasant to listen to. My only problems are the loose ends at the end of the audiobook but I suppose that was intentional and how everything seems a bit too convenient to be realistic.

This is a brilliant story, which really comes to life in this audio reading. Good for adults to listen to, as well as older children.

A joy to listen to

I have read this book twice, I paper form, many years ago when my children were young. I downloaded it on a whim and loved it all over again. It's a classic story of friendship and redemption and very well written. you can almost feel the heat and the thirst as the boys dig their holes under the merciless sun.
A great book for young and old!

Great storytelling that weaves and turns

my daughter was studying this book at school and kept coming home and telling me interesting bits about it so we were very excited to find it on audible. listened to it as as family during car journeys and often found ourselves sitting on the driveway enthralled and having to listen to just a bit more!

Exceptional

It’s been a while since I enjoyed a book as much as this.
A simple story, with unexpected detours, and a superb narrator- so natural and engaging that he could have been sitting next to me on the sofa.
Give it a go.
