  • Summary

  • Homeless Bodies and Other Stories is an original fiction podcast featuring audio-exclusive short stories from award-winning authors and Sunday Times best-sellers, inspired by objects & artefacts from Wellcome Collection's permanent exhibition, 'Medicine Man', in London.

Exploring themes of otherness, humanity, history, society and belief, Homeless Bodies and Other Stories brings together a gripping collection of tales that are unsettlingly eerie and provokingly current. Objects that inspired Audible's collection of stories include: a trepanned skull, drilled with holes to release trapped spirits; an iron scold's bridle, used to punish "˜gossiping' women; a 19th Century fragment of tattooed skin; a phrenology skull and an 18th Century wax vanitas head.

With six original, audio-exclusive stories, the collection includes brand new writing from: Imogen Hermes Gowar, Andrew Michael Hurley, Laura Purcell,Sarah Moss, Oyinkan Braithwaite and Haroun Khan.

Homeless Bodies and Other Stories sees these six authors probe the dark and twisted corners of humanity in an attempt to better understand ourselves and our place in the world with stories crafted specifically for the spoken-word. Before their stories, listeners will hear each of the authors in conversation with Wellcome's curators as they find out more about their chosen object's history.

With original musical composition and stirring sound design by Hana Walker-Brown.

Thoroughly interesting

Stories of people told as stories of objects told as stories of gender told as stories of violence told as stories of desire told as stories of horror told as stories of fascination.

Runs a nice gamut of creepy

Great series, listened to all 6 episodes in near succession as could not stop! Favorites were the Purcell and Braithwaite tales, but all were very good.

Some are good, some not so GOOD

I really liked some of the stories, the scolds bridle was one of my favorite ones, along with the story by Laura Purcell. Purcell never disappoints. Sarah Moss's story was not good at all and read like a textbook, she should stick to fantasy. Also I couldn't even finish listening to Kahn's story. I love the historical aspects at the start of each story telling about a historical object they based the story around. However, I do always think there is different prospectives to history and the accounts of the objects are 1 sided. As a woman I appreciate the amount of women authors, and the information on the torture and shame women suffered in the past. Overall, these are good stories mixed in with a few I didn't like.

Laura Purcell is one of my favorite authors. Thrilled to hear her story and discover some new authors to binge read, Might make a Vanitas of my own.

Wonderfully dark, beautiful pieces!

Loved every single one of these. The writing is gorgeously creepy and the music is so atmospheric.

Very Disappointing

Having been to the Wellcome Museum over 40 years ago many of the fascinating exhibits have stayed fresh in my memory ever since. I can't believe that this selection of tawdry items was the best that your chosen commentators could come up with from the wealth of medical phenomena available. What a missed opportunity

Unbearably boring

I made it as far as 33 minutes into the first episode.
My apologies to the author for maybe being impatient, but I have already lost the will to live. After half an hour of listening you'd think there would be some progress, something to grab the listener. But no. It was like watching paint dry. I'll try again in the future. Maybe I'll see something I'm not right now.

Could not finish

l listened to the first story in full, despite the long-winded and tedious introduction. I found it slow and unconvincing. The plot, such as it was, was flimsy and lacked a fulfilling climax.
The introductions of the next two stories were so lengthy and laborious, with the authors preaching about their particular points of view in a rather hectoring manner, that I could not listen further.
I fell asleep during the fourth story and gave up.

Great listen!

I don't normally listen to non-fiction books but I really loved these! If I had to choose 'The vanitas' and 'the scolds bridle' would have to be my favourite. Would recommended to everyone.
