Story
From tuberculosis to bird flu and HIV to coronavirus, these infectious diseases share a common origin story: human interaction with animals. Otherwise known as zoonotic diseases for their passage from animals to humans, these pathogens - both preexisting ones and those newly identified - emerge and reemerge throughout history, sparking epidemics and pandemics that have resulted in millions of deaths around the world. How did these diseases come about? And what - if anything - can we do to stop them and their fatal march into our countries, our homes and our bodies?

The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

Story
Sleep is one of the most important aspects of our life, health and longevity and yet it is increasingly neglected in 21st century society, with devastating consequences: every major disease in the developed world - Alzheimer's, cancer, obesity, diabetes - has very strong causal links to deficient sleep. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why its absence is so damaging to our health. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Story
Why, despite the many advances in science and technology over the past few decades, does our health only seem to be getting worse? Why, despite so much time and energy spent studying the foods we eat, are we more confused than ever about nutrition - what good nutrition looks like, and what it can do for our health? The Future of Nutrition offers a fascinating deep-dive behind the curtain of the field of nutrition - with implications both for our health and for the practice of science itself.
Publisher's Summary
Put an end to dieting and replace weight-loss struggles with this easy approach to a healthy, plant-based lifestyle. Every month seems to bring a trendy new diet or a new fad to try in order to lose weight - but these diets clearly aren’t making us any happier or healthier.
As obesity rates and associated disease and impairments continue to rise, it’s time for a different approach. How Not to Diet is a treasure trove of buried data and cutting-edge dietary research that Dr Michael Greger has translated into accessible, actionable advice with exciting tools and tricks that will help you to safely lose weight and eliminate unwanted body fat - for good.
Dr Greger, renowned nutrition expert, physician, and founder of nutritionfacts.org, explores the many causes of obesity - from our genes to the portions on our plate to other environmental factors - and the many consequences, from diabetes to cancer to mental health issues.
From there, Dr Greger breaks down a variety of approaches to weight loss, honing in on the optimal criteria that enable success, including: a diet high in fibre and water, a diet low in fat, salt, and sugar, and a diet full of anti-inflammatory foods.
How Not to Diet then goes beyond food to explore the many other weight-loss accelerators available to us in our body’s systems, revealing how plant-based meals can be eaten at specific times to maximise our bodies’ natural fat-burning activities.
Dr Greger provides a clear plan not only for the ultimate weight loss diet but also the approach we must take to that diet to unlock its greatest efficacy.

Learn what to eat for health and weight control
Dr. Michael Greger has a staff who read all the published scientific studies on how to lose excess fat and how to stay slim. He reads his book himself and he makes, what could be dull, interesting and useful.
This is the real deal. He isn’t pushing some miracle cure or selling any supplements, instead he tells us exactly how human beings should eat for health and longevity and in doing this never need to go on another diet. He is the man!

Get educated and take control of your health. I enjoyed the narration as the author kept me engaged and gave some lightness to what can be an overwhelming subject. Also, a slower talking pace meant I could absorb the information which is extensive. I feel empowered and motivated to venture forth to loose the weight. If performance is going to stop you listening, then get a physical copy or have someone read it to you! Audio comes with a great PDF which I happily read on my tablet. You can save yourself so don’t let reviews on narration stop you. THANK YOU Michael and your team.

Possibly one of the most important books ever
If you get over the first 15min of stop and go talking, this book has a lot to offer. The author and his team have gathered information that is scientifically proven to improve your health and help you losing weight. I did not listen to it to lose weight, but was nevertheless absolutely fascinated about how much there is to know about food and how little the average person knows. This book is absolutely recommended. I almost could not believe the insights I got, but am convinced that this book enlightened me a lot.

Could have been streamlined somewhat
I loved how not to die and listened to it over and over and although it contained scientific evidence to back up the claims made in the book, it was made interesting to the listener by blending it in with stories and anecdotes from Dr Gregor’s experiences. This book was nothing like that and really heavy going at times. It seemed more like a reference book than an enlightening experience.
I can’t help feeling that he could have saved the reference material for the end of the book for people who are interested in looking into that and just kept the rest of the book as a general run through, in order of effectiveness, of the methods that the layman can apply in order to shed weight, as well as adding some welcome anecdotes.
His narration has become hard to listen to since how not to die as also. By the end, I was completely fed up of hearing him emphasise his own catchphrase “put it to the test” or hearing about another “randomised, double blind, placebo controlled trial”
I wanted to be able to listen to the book again like the first one, as you miss a lot of information the first time around but I don’t think I could face it again.

Very detailed, not great for IBS sufferers though
I actually enjoy his quirky narration style and nerding out into details about various studies.
Only problem I have is implementing a lot of the recommendations due to IBS, like many IBS sufferers I often feel better with more refined versions of foods (e.g. white rice instead of brown, instant oats instead of steel cut oats, cooked veg instead of salads, also cruciferous veg can be a digestive nightmare, as can flax seeds). I also have a hard time going vegan, there are times when in a flare up and the only foods I can eat are chicken soup and white rice. Sadly as a result I can't really go full whole food, plant based, high veg, high fibre and "put it to the test" as he says :D I learned a lot of interesting science though and implement what I can. I hope he'll write a book about IBS someday!

WHO DID THE SOUND PRODUCTION?
(EDITED TO ADD: Okay, persist past the first chapter or two, they seem to stop messing with the speed... Fingers crossed it stays just the regular Dr Greger speech pattern and not the FAST and sloooowwww mash up that was the introduction!)
Goddammit, Audible! I know Dr Greger. I have listened to his podcast. I have watched his videos. THIS IS NOT WHAT HE SOUNDS LIKE. This audio book makes him sounds like a drunk!
It's like the audio engineer thought they would "help" by speeding up his speech, but not all of his speech, so the cadence and rhythm and timing is all off! It's a mess!
I already bought the Kindle version and I'll probably buy the hardcopy as well but even if you're a huge Dr Greger fan, like I am, this Audible version is a nightmare! Unlistenable!

Such a great resource of nutritional information that is easy to understand. Dr Greger's enthusiasm makes it enjoyable to listen to as well. I took my time listening to this book (4 months or so, I think) to implement its advice along the way, and I've already lost 31lbs.

Ought to be compulsory reading.
I was a huge fan of 'How Not to Die' so when I saw this new iteration I bought it straight away.
There is, of course, some crossover here from 'How Not to Die' but the topic and approach are quite different and, where the topics converge, updates are given which are worth knowing.
The format of the book, for those who don't know, is one where Dr Greger poses or is posed a question and then explores studies conducted relevant to that topic. A large emphasis is placed on evaluating the efficacy and methodology of the experiments done and then exploring what lessons can be gleaned from them.
Now, I wrote above "Ought to be compulsory reading" and I chose my words carefully. Dr Gregers voice and reading style are certainly not for everybody. I found myself slightly annoyed with him at the start of the book, but i quickly became fond of his quirky style.
Do yourself a favour and buy it. On audible or elsewhere, it will have something in it you will want to know.

The truth is here... "let's put it to the test"
FINALLY... the TRUTH! Dr. Greger has delivered an outstanding array of simple strategies that literally anyone can use and implement into their lives straight away. They have been developed based on fact, not fiction or fancy advertising - no smoke and mirrors here. "How not to Diet" is an easy-to-understand, practical guide that takes the hard work out of sifting through all the myths and downright lies, and exposes the truth, backed by real science, about how we become overweight and unwell, who is keeping us there, and how to fix it... permanently.
If you're anything like me, you've tried every new gimmicky diet, starved yourself, popped a myriad of useless (if not downright dangerous) pills and potions, and nearly killed yourself with back-breaking exercises, not to mention the countless dollars you've donated to so-called gurus with their "miracle" gadgets and elixirs... and you're still overweight, unhealthy and unhappy! If you've tried everything and failed, your bloods and numbers are all over the place, and you want the truth about how you got here, who really helped you get here, and how to fix it, "How not to Diet" is your one-stop shop for facts and simple, do-able strategies. Just "put it to the test".

Greger Putting It to the Test
Michael Greger presents the science of nutrition in a very engaging way. I’ve been obese my whole life and wish a book like this had been written years ago. I can now say ‘I’ve tried every single diet in the book ‘ 😂 thanks Dr Greger for presenting the facts !!

Comprehensive and reassuring
This is the last weight loss book you'll need to buy. Full of actionable, science based recommendations and it doesn't sugar coat any of the conclusions. Found it very reassuring on my path to improve health.

Michael’s an awful narrator
Michael’s a great writer but awful narrator. Every third word involves unnecessary inflections and elongations that just get in the way
