National Book Awards 2014: Crime/Thriller Book of the Year

Can you commit the perfect crime?

Pilgrim is the code name for a man who doesn't exist. The adopted son of a wealthy American family, he once headed up a secret espionage unit for US intelligence. Before he disappeared into anonymous retirement, he wrote the definitive book on forensic criminal investigation. But that book will come back to haunt him. It will help NYPD detective Ben Bradley track him down. And it will take him to a run-down New York hotel room where the body of a woman is found facedown in a bath of acid, her features erased, her teeth missing, her fingerprints gone. It is a textbook murder - and Pilgrim wrote the book.

What begins as an unusual and challenging investigation will become a terrifying race against time to save America from oblivion. Pilgrim will have to make a journey from a public beheading in Mecca to a deserted ruin on the Turkish coast via a Nazi death camp in Alsace and the barren wilderness of the Hindu Kush in search of the faceless man who would commit an appalling act of mass murder in the name of his god.

This is now the entire audiobook, not in two parts.

Greatest thriller of the decade!

I chose this book out of curiosity for the title(and a little for the cover!) and thought it would be a good read on lazy afternoons. I was wrong!
It started with a murder and after a lot of globetrotting and flashbacks and informations and epic descriptions and a few thousand good quotes later! It ended!!! Too bad. I didn’t want it to end but it did just like all good things it was stuck on my memories and a few days ago I got it as a audiobook on audible.
Good things get better on the second try, they say. Yes, true as a mother! The voice of Ragland is very emotive and beautifully expresses subtle changes in the pilgrims mind. The story is beautifully written and designed for one thing only: holding your attention!
The main character , pardon me the blasphemy, is better than even Jack teacher and Jason bourne and the smoothness of the story is unparalleled. Their are no jerks in the journey if you know what I a ur man
m saying. Not a moment of disbelief in the unbelievable story. The side characters a well written and very very well fleshed out. But the main character is by miles superior than any generic spy story you can see on shelf’s these days. The villain is superb and only parallel I can give to his greatness is the joker from the dark knight! The ending is peaceful and world a little better because of this book. Thanks Terry Hayes for writing, what is probably, one of the greatest spy fiction ever written!!!

Started out strong but then

The story started strongly then seemed to fizzle out towards the end. The end, it seemed to me, was stretched unnecessarily. The book could have been concluded 150 pages earlier.

Blitzkrieg , thrilling and unputdownable !

If I imagined I would write a novel, this would be as close to it ..... it is thrilling for most part, poignant at some , but a fiction novel worth reading....my first fiction in years and I am happy I read ...eh listened ...to it !
