Winner of the African American Literary Award for Memoir!

An inspiring, hilarious memoir about learning to resist the pressures of conformity, love yourself for who you are, embrace your flaws, and unlock your true potential.

Now cohost of Fox's The Real and SiriusXM's Café Mocha, Loni Love hasn't taken the typical path to becoming America's favorite straight-talking girlfriend and comedian. She was not the child of Hollywood legends, and she never wore a size 00. Rather, she grew up in housing projects in Detroit, more worried about affording her next meal than going on a diet. When she moved to Hollywood after graduating college with an engineering degree, seeking to break out in the entertainment world, there was nothing that would convince her to eat the kale salads and quinoa bowls that her colleagues introduced her to, which looked to Love like "Weeds my grandma used to pay me a dollar to pull from her yard."

Still, despite the differences that set her apart in the status-driven world of entertainment where being thin, young, blonde, and bubbly is sometimes considered a talent, Love spent years trying to fit in - trying to style her hair just so, dieting, dating the men she thought with whom she was supposed to be. In this audiobook, she tells the uproariously funny story of how she overcame the trap of self-improvement and instead learned to embrace who she was. As Love writes, "There's a saying a lot of people live by: 'Fake it till you make it.' For me, it's always been 'fake it, and then have the whole thing blow up in your face.'" I Tried to Change So You Don't Have To explores all of the embarrassing mistakes, terrifying challenges, and unexpected breakthroughs that taught her how, by committing ourselves to our own path, we can take control of our destiny.

Awesome Book

Awesome book. Thank you Loni Love for sharing your truth so unapologetically. As I embrace my 40 year old self, I am learning to Love myself and be a ok with the person that God created. Listening to your book provided insight and perspective on my own journey to SELF peace and happiness. Thank you again 🙂.

Incredible

She is so open and raw. She provides so many little details to the point where you can see imagine exactly what is happening at any given time. Although this is a book of her life, Loni did not disappoint with all the laughs throughout as well. This book is very encouraging and motivating to keep on going no matter what. Life is definitely not easy, but make the best of it.

Good but

Unlike her great big boisterous personality her reading is quite deadpan. Story was good, inspiring.

I love Loni more now than before.

A very interesting story. Narration was challenging, but I look forward to hearing about her next life chapter.

Wonderful Book!

I loved it! It was a wonderful read from start to finish. I love Loni Love's personality and candor. She gave you a look into her world. It wasn't all roses. She kept fighting until she got what she knew she deserved and she's still going.

Love Loni Love!

Loni Love pulls few punches in this well executed memoir covering life in the projects, maternal love & a lack thereof, enterprise & hard work. living in poverty & rising from it. She recounts police racism, helps us to understand how that cute boy with dimples reaches a crossroads where he’d choose the bad path, all while very self aware, often funny & always keenly insightful. Well done!
