About this listen

Aerospace engineer Esther Abbott doesn't believe in love, but she's perfectly happy to hate her annoying screenwriter neighbor, Jonathan. Until she's forced to strike a devil's bargain with him: he distracts her best friend from a mouth-breather ex, and in return Esther will help him with the sci-fi script he's writing.

Her patience is put to the test when it's time to fulfill her end of the deal. But the more time she spends with her nemesis, the more hate turns into attraction - and attraction into something much deeper. As Esther's carefully constructed defenses start to crumble, will love be her undoing or her salvation?

Intermediate Thermodynamics follows in the tradition of contemporary romantic comedy favorites like Penny Reid, Sally Thorne, and Jennifer Crusie. This enemies-to-lovers romance is the second in a series of standalone rom-coms featuring geeky heroines who work in STEM fields.

Contains mature themes.

When an aerospace engineer agrees to help her infuriatingly charming screenwriter neighbor with his sci-fi script, she discovers the biggest scientific mystery might just be falling in love.

This is the second book in the Chemistry Lessons series, and while I absolutely loved Remedial Rocket Science, Intermediate Thermodynamics didn’t quite land the same way for me.

Let’s start with what worked:
✔️ Esther’s character was genuinely intriguing. Her emotional struggles felt raw and well-written.
✔️ The setup had potential—grumpy aerospace engineer + artsy screenwriter neighbor? Yes, please.
✔️ The supporting characters truly stood out. In fact, I found them more compelling than the leads.
✔️ The story had depth. There were meaningful themes and glimpses of something richer beneath the surface.

But then...
❌ The romance felt more convenient than convincing. While it did develop into something deeper, the initial chemistry felt rushed and forced—like we skipped a few essential beats.
❌ Their relationship lacked focus. So much time was spent on subplots that their romance never got the spotlight it needed.

That said, it was still an easy listen. And since book one was a hit for me, I’m definitely continuing the series—I have a feeling the next one might just win me over again.

easy listen, but lacked in somewhere
