Publisher's Summary

Psychology in the 21st century is not the seemingly static clinical field that you may have learned about in high school. Now there’s a substantial focus on “mindset” and the malleable nature of our experiences. When we understand how our mindset works, we can influence our behavior. There is also a greater emphasis on how the principles of psychology can help you to improve your everyday life, including how understanding your perceptions can help you to better understand the world.

Human beings are endlessly fascinating. Our social organization, our perceptions of the world, our emotional range, and our inner thoughts all define what it means to be human. The field of psychology has always been the scientific study of mental processes and behavior, helping us to understand ourselves and the world around us. How do we think, feel, and remember? Why do we act the way we do? And, most important, is there any way we can train our minds to improve our lives?

What’s new in the field of psychology is that many answers to these questions are beginning to be well understood. From the days of Freud and Skinner to the modern science of fMRIs and genetics, Introduction to Psychology is a grand introduction to one of the most captivating fields of inquiry - where the subject is you, and everyone around you. Taught by Professor Catherine A. Sanderson of Amherst College, these 36 insightful lessons not only give you a panoramic grounding in the history, methods, and fundamental findings of psychology, but they also introduce you to the most up-to-date 21st-century research and discoveries - including strategies to increase your happiness and to improve how to live your life.

When you complete Introduction to Psychology, you will come away with a new way of looking at the human experience. You will have gained insights to help you better understand yourself. And your new wealth of strategies will help you to think more clearly, be more courageous, strengthen relationships, and generally experience greater psychological and physical well-being.

Cool TED talk

This is not chronological or even clearly divided into domains. It's not a history of psychology at all. I wanted James, Dewey, Freud, functionalism vs. structuralism etc.. Unless you're into the TED talk personal development careerist type of bs Brene Brown psychology, get the Daniel N Robinson one instead. :)

Needs a professional narrator

After 3 tries I gave up on the narration, sounds like a frog with all the croaking and fry vocals. Smoker perhaps. Makes me appreciate a skilled, practiced, effortless narration. I thought there would be some history and background on the topic instead of jumping around “pop” psych topics from books written in the 1970’s. Not interesting nor educational.

It will make you want to major in Psychology

I was interested from beginning to end. I learned alot and was able to relate and/or apply to my daily life. It also shifted my perspective on various topics by acknowledging some false preconceived notions about a topic.

One of the best introduction to psychology

I have been searching for a good book on psychology. I have come across many of them but this one is the absolute best. It is because the other categorize the sections topically as opposed to the storage place, so the listeners and learners get to learn about psychological concepts through what makes sense rather than what makes sense only to psychologist. I recommend it to everybody.

Practical introduction to psychology

The lecturer starts by defining psychology as the discipline that studies mental processes and behaviors by asking how things occur, why, and how can we change the behavior. She then comments the ethical issues that may arise in psychology research and that there are now regulations innthe US to avoid conducting experiments that may harm the volunteers. She also recalls that correlation does not mean causality. The contents of the remaining lectures are: psychology of the positive attitude, exploring happiness and the means to achieve it; the different parts of the brain and their specific functions discovered using magnetic resonnance and other techniques, the exchange of information between the nervous and endocrine systems and the rest of the body; examples of the chemicals involved in the process; stress and its effects on the body; pain, importance of sleep; meditation, hypnose; influence of arousal on performance in sports; cognitive developments (childhood, adolescence, old age), language aquisition; how the quality of relations between parents and child influence the type of relations the child will have with others in adulthood; moral values: there is an innate sense of good and evil in children, and it can be fostered or inhibited by the environment; reward and punishment as a technique for fostering some behaviors may not be effective and may even be counter productive; memory and how it works, false confessions, intelligence and IQ tests; emotional intelligence; managing traumatic experiences; motivation; love, relation with partner; persuation; drive to conform within a group; stereotypes; altruism; the Big 5; mental illness, mood disorders, addiction; psychotherapy: does it work? Mindset: positive thoughts have a positive effect on the body; importance of excercise.

This said, in many lectures, the lecturer says "following this theory..." which seems to me equivalent to "we don't know so we have to speculate". Psychology deals with complex phenomena so one has to be aware that this is partly art (subjective) and part science (objective).

Excellent (but biased)!

Great introduction to psychology but it's difficult to ignore the bias. The nature Vs nurture debate in psychology seems to be never ending, whilst practically all researchers in the field accept that most of our behaviours and characteristics are a product of both, ideological standings often make them favour one side or the other

Sanderson clearly has a nurture bias, in nearly all topics she mentions genetic influences of behaviour before brushing them off and then giving much heavier weight to the nature argument (even if the argument and evidence are much weaker than that provided by the nature side).

Despite this, the course was a great overall introduction to the field of psychology.

superficial

It says it's an introduction but it really is a superficial overview. There are a few words about the replication crisis, followed by a breathless tour of a great many empirical studies without any critical discussion. This really is well below university level.

Really interesting summary of latest psychology thoughts and findings

Honestly, I thought I'd never get through over 18 hours but I needed a refresh of psychology studies, so I dove in and really enjoyed every bit of it. Very wide range of topics, up-to-date research and very applicable to everyday lives. The narration was excellent and I'm definitely going to listen to more of her work!

Excellent introduction

This is the best book I’ve listened to on audible. I was hooked, neat and short chapters and other a great narrator. Couldn’t fault it, may even listen again. Also it was on the free books and I probably would not have come across it but I would have absolutely paid for it if I knew how useful it would be.
