John Quincy Adams, the son of the second president, is generally viewed as a failed chief executive. A respected diplomat who became secretary of state under President James Monroe, JQ Adams won the contested 1824 election with the support of Speaker Henry Clay, whose endorsement led to Adams’s selection by the House of Representatives under the Twelfth Amendment. The so-called corrupt bargain haunted him throughout his presidency. Although his time in the White House was largely uninspired, JQ Adams went on to gain election to the House of Representatives, where he ultimately faced censure for his strong antislavery views. The only president to serve in the House of Representatives after leaving the White House, Adams collapsed during a roll call on the House floor, after calling out an objection to the Mexican War, and died two days later.
