Story
The story of Yayati is perhaps one of the most intriguing and fascinating episodes of Mahabharata. Yayati was a great scholar and one of the noblest rulers of olden times. He followed the shastras and was devoted to the welfare of his subjects. Even the king of gods, Indra, held him in high esteem. Married to seductively beautiful Devyani, in love with her maid Sharmishtha, and father of five sons from two women, Yayati unabashedly declared, 'My lust for pleasure is unsatisfied'. His quest for the carnal continued.

Publisher's Summary
Kurukshetra is a Hindi classic. It gives an extraordinary account of the Kurukshetra war mentioned in the Mahabharata. It describes in vivid details the armed confrontation that took place between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. This bloody war lasted eighteen days. The author's own views on war are showcased in this work. He criticizes war but also admits that it is a necessary evil. It describes the demerits of war and the damage it does to mankind, through the medium of poetry.
In a situation where one's country's freedom is threatened, one must defend oneself even if one has to resort to war. The importance of power is also emphasized. The negative consequences of war have been highlighted through the dialogues between Bhishma and Yudhisthira and the latter's remorse over his own actions.
Kurukshetra is a beautifully written masterpiece, and it has a timeless appeal.

Not just a book, but an epic
What a book to read! In fact, I listened to it on Audibles. It was a treat to listen to this Kavya composed by Kavya Smrat. The theme of the Kavya was the moral dilemma of Yudhisthir after Mahabharata wherein he blames himself for the war and realizes that the war was futile. Then, Bhishma who is on the bed of arrows tells him that the war was not of his making only. It was brewing up for a long time. He was just one part of it. War and fighting are innate nature of mankind. In the second-last chapter, he discusses present times and how despite so much knowledge, human is still like an animal. It is more relevant as the poem was written in 1946 immediately after WW II. Finally, in the last chapter, he urges Yudhisthir to rule his kingdom for the betterment of mankind rather than leaving worldly things for atonement.
The poem conveys a lot about the nature of mankind and discusses the war at great length - its futility and yet inevitability and thereby its necessity.
The language as usual is full of Veer Ras, the most appealing trademark of my favorite Dinkar. The narrator of the Audible did complete justice and I found listening to it more beautiful than reading it.

timeless depiction of mind space in mahabharatha
great to listen, extremely relevant for today's political situation. as always any literary work based on Mahabharata will always remain contemporary. the sheer power of Dinkar's language is awe inspiring. but bit tedious to hear without visible text. addition of PDF to view along with audio would be great .
