Dimitrij Rostovskij proslavilsja kak plodotvornyj cerkovnyj avtor - sostavitel' sbornikov zhitij svjatyh (naibolee izvestnyj, v chetyreh knigah - "Chet'i-Minei"). Rabota nad zhitijami svjatyh byla nachata 6 maja 1684 goda i prodolzhalas' v techenie 20 let. Mitropolit Dimitrij stal pervym svjatym, kanonizirovannym k obshherusskomu pochitaniju v sinodal'nyj period, a takzhe edinstvennym, proslavlennym v XVIII veke. Elizaveta Petrovna velela izgotovit' dlja moshhej Dimitrija serebrjanuju raku i oblachenie iz zolotoj parchi. Odnako na samih torzhestvah v Rostove v 1763 godu po sluchaju perelozhenija moshhej Dimitrija v novuju raku prisutstvovala uzhe Ekaterina II.
