First drink. First prank. First friend. First love. Last words.

Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words - and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet François Rabelais called the “Great Perhaps”. Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young, who will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps.

Looking for Alaska brilliantly chronicles the indelible impact one life can have on another. A modern classic, this stunning debut marked number one best-selling author John Green’s arrival as a groundbreaking new voice in contemporary fiction.

Critic Reviews

"What sets this novel apart is the brilliant, insightful, suffering but enduring voice of Miles Halter." (Chicago Tribune)

"A gem of modern literature." (Guardian)

"What sings and soars in this gorgeously told tale is Green’s mastery of language and the sweet, rough edges of Pudge’s voice." (Kirkus)

This book is so good. Its beautiful in its prose and the discussions it has are so powerful. The philosophys within the pages hold out to be some of the most interesting in the world. I read this in 2 days, straight- it keeps you hooked without ever having a breakneck pace

I am concussed dot-dot-dot

This novel has been my favorite since the moment I finished it the first time. I've bought the anniversary edition and have read it at least three times. So when I saw that Wil Wheaton, my favorite actor, would be narrating my favorite book I literally cried. His performance in Ready Player one practically save the book and it was amazing here as well. he definitely has a knack for this stuff.
John's writing style is by far the most philosophical I've ever seen. It shows in his Vlogbrothers videos and it shows here. Awkward moments, new friends, love, pranks, heartbreak, and quite a bit of mystery. If you know John well enough and his love for Catcher in the Rye you might be worried but, thankfully, there's only mild teen angst. All of which are seen in other novels bit they blend so nicely here. It feels so real.
I believe there are moments in this book for everyone. Something that everyone will need. Maybe not the whole book for some. But I can attest, without a doubt, that there are many moments where I am the mother f****** fox.🦊

Loved it

There's something very charming and warm about Wil Wheaton's narration voice that allows this book and really any book he narrates to be so inviting and relatable. The content of this story was great. It had me guessing where the plot would turn next, and the complexity and unpredictability of Alaska's character is what kept me reeled in. While I kind of guessed what the twist would be that would resolve the main conflict at the end of the book, I definitely did not see the second twist coming. Satisfying ending and great story.

I liked it

I listened to this because it is our exchange student's favorite book. I wanted to have something to talk to her about when she first came to live with us. I can see the attraction for teens. Lots and lots of foul language. I despised that part of it, but it was a good story.

it was OKAYYY. just ok.

There are books that I can't stop. I NEED to listen to them so I know what happens next. This was not one of them. This was more like I have nothing else better to do so I might as well get this one over with so I can move on to the next one. This took me too long to finish because I had to push myself to listen. Just .. ok.

Life like, with less cringe.

Fun book, leaves me thinking back to my teenage years and how a book like this would have left an impression on my life. Being in my 30’s I look back and to what I’ve experienced in this here Labyrinth. Wil Wheaton was an awesome narrator.

An emotional rollercoaster

My first audible book and not one I would ordinarily have chosen but I really enjoyed it. I laughed, I cried and when it was all over, I hugged my wife. I will probably choose to have Wil Wheaton read more to me in future.

have a go

I read this story years ago on the train through Europe. I havew read the other books by John Green, but like with all authors, you always have your favourite and this is my one. I am not going to review the story but I will say, that this story has made me really think about the people we surround us with, will affect your lives in unique and different ways but only if we allow them too. This story is a great Sunday afternoon read or listen. All I can say, just give it a try. You may like it or you may not.

Good book well read by Ensign Wesley Crusher

Good book well read by Ensign Wesley Crusher. A lot of cigarette smoking but wrestles with some important issues about which you are forced as a reader to make judgements.

Teen Angst in All its Glory

I read this cause of the reading list required for highschool teachers. I like it a lot, but it felt very taxing as I got to jump back into my angsty dramatic teen self who needed support and help. The first thing I could think of writing about the book was that it was a Sad and Horny Mixtape of Teenage Angst. I loved the story, the themes and the overall images that John Green makes. But I did struggle with the voice work and at times felt like Wil dragged down the content, but honestly that could just be my taste and preference of performers. Overall good experience, I can definitely recomend as well as warn for the flood of teen emotions.
