Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936)
Gilbert Keith Chesterton nació el 29 de mayo de 1874 en Londres, en el seno de una familia acomodada. No aprendió a leer hasta después de los ocho años.
Estudió en University College y Slade School of Art (1893-1896).
En 1900 publicó la primera colección de poemas. En 1904 su primera novela The Napoleon of Notting Hill y en 1908 El hombre que fue Jueves.
En 1909 se trasladó con su esposa a Beaconsfield, un pueblo veinticinco millas al oeste de Londres, y continuó escribiendo y viajando para dar conferencias.
Entre 1913 y 1914 contribuyó regularmente con el Daily Herald.
En 1914 sufrió una depresión física.
Después de la Primera Guerra Mundial se hizo líder del movimiento Distributist.
En 1922 se convirtió del anglicanismo al catolicismo romano y escribió las vidas de Francisco de Asís y Tomás de Aquino.
Recibió grados honoris causa de las universidades de Edinburgh, Dublín y Notre Dame.
En 1934 fue hecho Caballero de la Orden de San Gregorio el Grande.
Murió el 14 de junio de 1936 en su casa en Beaconsfield, Inglaterra.
Entre 1900 y 1936 Chesterton publicó unos 100 libros, fue uno de los más grandes escritores del siglo XX.
