"Los gestos inútiles es mucho más que una novela coherente con el espíritu de nuestros tiempos, pues no solo persigue el "entretenimiento" del lector, sino también su reflexión. La novela exige una participación activa de sus lectores, quienes deberán, como un detective más, reconstruir las pistas que la historia va dejando a su paso. En ello, el fino humor de Andújar será pieza clave, pues bajo la burla, bajo la risa, como predicaba el italiano Luigi Pirandello, subyace siempre la crítica. La imagen "ideal", "armónica" y "feliz" de República Dominicana, será desdibujada por la ironía de Andújar, y cederá paso a un retrato invadido por la corrupción".
