Story
Now a student at Wurthaven, Will is confronted with the truth of the present. The powerful magic embodied by wizards like his grandfather is but a distant memory. Though the practice of the current day is timid and uninspired, Will needs the knowledge that’s preserved and managed by the college. At every turn he finds that sorcery is supreme, while wizards are trained merely to assist and support those who hold the real power - a power based on an evil so deep that few who are living know the truth of its foundation.

Story
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Enjoyed the series so much that after a year I had to listen to it again. I hate incomplete endings that does nothing to satisfy. Not the case here. I felt whole and satisfied. Thanks

Surprisingly unfolds in complex fantasy
Overall a decent listen which gets better as the story progresses. Audible doesn’t outline the order of books in a series. This problem left me guessing. Unfortunately I selected this book as my first read only to find at the end it just comes near the end of the series so I am a bit disappointed. Also of note, well Todd McLaren does a fairly good job with the narration, I had to increase the speed slightly because the flow of his reading is slightly blunted.

Moving!
I have already read these books, and I am new to audible so I decided to listen to the books I have enjoyed. Listening to them again has moved me to want to read them again. I love this story in its entirety! I have celebrated the bonds of friendship, the uncomfortable feelings of unsure affections. I openly bawled at the sacrifice of life, for the ones you love. Great story from the beginning struggle for power, to the end of mastery, and the trials in between.

Good story, unsympathetic protagonist
I enjoyed the over all premise of the story and it was well thought out and well written, but his main character across the whole series comes across as a sleazy voyeur who takes every opportunity to leer lecherously any time a bit of flesh is on show.
Also, the interactions between him and his spouse seem strangely odd. They seem to have a relationship built on anger and this just didn’t ring true to me. They seemed to fly off the handle at the drop of a hat. It seemed wholly dysfunctional.
All that being said, however, I did enjoy the story and even though the main character annoyed me, I did read the full series.
