About this listen

Brenn Owen, the new but impoverished Earl of Merton, is looking for a bride - one rich enough to finance his estate. When he meets Tess Hamlin, he sees a woman who is not only wealthy, but a dazzling beauty as well. To his surprise, Tess quickly accepts his proposal. But behind her eagerness lurks a secret she will do anything to hide from him. As the Earl and his bride begin their life together, their path is a passionate one, but far from smooth: haste must give way to patience and understanding. Virginia Leishman's narration heightens the drama of each colorful exchange between the lovers.

Millions of fans agree with Romantic Times when it praises Cathy Maxwell for being an author "who understands the human heart and whose stories touch our souls". Her novels are filled with dashing, daring characters, yet their desires are universal.

Critic Reviews

"Maxwell...makes good use of her trademark clean, crisp prose style, weaving a reverse gift-of-the-magi tale set in the Black Mountains of Wales and starring two engaging and lusty protagonists." (Publishers Weekly)

While the book was a nice read, it focussed too heavily on the miscommunication / lies, which went on for far too long imo. They only clear the air towarda the end?? it's simply unrealistic that both parties could hold onto the ruse for so long. The author gravely underestimated how 'in-everyones-business' the regency era was. FL's lack of fortune and ML's ruined estate would have been widely knownn; therefore, the whole premise is shaky (ntm a scandal of such minor degree would not hinder proposals for a girl so rich in wealth, pedigree and beauty). ALSO, this book was less love and more lust - it's not a shortcoming if that's the author's style but it seemed contrary to what she was trying to portray as eternal love when they barely had any real conversations. finally, i hate how they let the brother and sister-in-law get away with absolutely no consequences (ugh)

but the silver lining was the FL's writing (loved how she incorporated Welsh folklore; as an Indian, it always warms my heart seeing native culture being embraced) + the way her achivements along with the ML"s where highlighted in the end through a factual narration was super cool.

okay-ish but better towards the last act

both the main characters were hiding important things from each other but once they admit their shortcomings....they found a way to get past them and build their happily ever after....nowadays relationships are broken due to silly reasons...this books shows us that compromise and forgiveness can help laying a solid foundation for strong relations
