Story
Beartown is a small town in a large Swedish forest. For most of the year it is under a thick blanket of snow, experiencing the kind of cold and dark that brings people closer together - or pulls them apart. Its isolation means that Beartown has been slowly shrinking with each passing year. But now the town is on the verge of an astonishing revival. A bright new future is just around the corner. Until the day it is all put in jeopardy by a single, brutal act. It divides the town into those who think it should be hushed up and forgotten, and those who'll risk the future to see justice done.

She had no school records because she’d never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father didn’t believe in hospitals. As she grew older, her father became more radical and her brother more violent. At 16, Tara knew she had to leave home. In doing so she discovered both the transformative power of education, and the price she had to pay for it.

Publisher's Summary
Ever wonder what your therapist is really thinking? Now you can find out...a hilarious, thought-provoking and surprising new book that takes us behind the scenes of a therapist's world.
Meet Lori Gottlieb, an insightful and compassionate therapist whose clients present with all kinds of problems. There’s the struggling new parents; the older woman who feels she has nothing to live for; the self-destructive young alcoholic; and the terminally ill 35-year-old newlywed.
And there’s John, a narcissistic television producer, who frankly just seems to be a bit of a jerk. Over the course of a year, they all make progress. But Gottlieb is not just a therapist - she’s also a patient who's on a journey of her own.
Interspersed with the stories of her clients are her own therapy sessions, as Gottlieb goes in search of the hidden roots of a devastating and life-changing event.
Personal, revealing, funny and wise, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone opens a rare window onto a world that is most often bound by secrecy, offering an illuminating tour of a profoundly private process.

A pass
I didn’t like this book. I found it quite boring and lacking in depth overall and verging on cringeworthy in parts. The author tries so hard that it was difficult to listen to at times. The overacting of the narration didn’t help. Given the subject I expected something interesting and insightful but it wasn’t either.

Informative and very entertaining!
I've always been fascinated by how therapists cope with all the "mess" they have to fix in other peoples' lives! One friend tells me a secret and the burden weighs on me like a boulder; the thought that therapists get to be hundreds of peoples' confidantes always boggled my mind!
This was a fascinating insight into what being a therapist and a "normal" human looks like; how the 2 coexist perfectly.
I loved every chapter! The story was intriguing and the narrator was amazing.
Will definitely read it again and again!

Don’t listen to the last five or six chapters while driving!
I loved this book and all the characters in it. It was difficult to not form a connection with each of the characters in the book as you shared their journey through therapy. I found the last five or six chapters emotionally difficult to listen to and while driving the car to work experienced floods of tears as each characters story was brought to a conclusion. A satisfying listen that has left me questioning my life, my decisions, my stuckness in my situation. Great to listen to a book that makes you reflect on your circumstances and how different life could be if you could find the courage to take the required steps. Maybe I need to talk to someone!

So bad I'm astonished at the praise.
How this author managed to become a qualified psychotherapist, is beyond me. Or perhaps her work as a psychotherapist is mountains above her work as an author. I hope so. I suspect that the author had in mind a certain style for this book - an angle, a gimmick - that ultimately was misguided, resulting in this work that isn't sure if it's YA fodder or serious memoir on healing.
The author opts to play the role of a stunted adolescent attempting to do serious talk therapy. She shows subtle contempt and indifference to her clients (in her inner narration, of course). She presents herself as "little old me", reacting to her professional, interpersonal relationships with jabs at her clients, and winks and nods to her listener, apparently under the impression that her listener is a teenage girl. Not that the young adult genre - with its subcategories - is somehow bad. It isn't. But this book sells itself as something more serious and substantial. It isn't.
The author describes being dumped by her fiance - and the subsequent steps she takes - in the manner of someone sat at the lunch table in some high school rom-com. For several minutes at a time, the author expresses shock and disbelief, dragging out the so-called seriousness of her situation, as her friends chime in now and then with name-calling directed at said ex. Did I care? I did not.
Perhaps the problem was my expectation. I thought this would be a serious yet popular-level work (hopefully akin to Grosz's The Examined Life but with a personal touch), not some knock-off Nora Ephron piece. I imagine, however, that there is an audience for this work. Indeed, the things I complained about may be the very things that others find attractive. If you're after light-hearted humour set in the world of therapy - one where the therapy itself takes a backseat to "Shucks, I'm just a 45-year-old woman trying to make her way in the world" - then you might like this, provided you have little respect for the delicate subject of healing. And provided you don't mind being spoon-fed the obvious. For me, this work is a terrible, embarrassing mess that borders on offensive.

Insightful, powerful, normal and highly enjoyable
As a counsellor I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, both the account of giving and receiving counselling. I kept thinking of clients I wanted to recommend it to, so you certainly don't have to be in the profession to get lots out of it - it's an account of life struggles and triumphs, existentialism and endings. It'll certainly give you personal insight.
It's also written in an easy to follow way and isn't full of counselling lingo or terminology and is fully geared towards ordinary people, going about life wondering what the meaning of it all.

I adore this book and will come back to it again in the future. I cared about what happened to every character, and it was peppered with non-preachy wisdom too. At times, deeply emotional and, at others, beautifully funny! The narrator also seemed very real, like this was believably her book, her words. Perfect listen for me as a trainee counsellor, and I imagine a great many people would love it.

fascinating insight into the world of therapy
This book was interesting and helpful, and the narrator was lively. It gave me a lot to think about relating to my own experiences and way of being in the world. One thing that left me feeling uncomfortable was the way the author talked about the experiences of older women, particularly Rita. I felt that the author had much less compassion and more judgement about Rita's situation compared to the other stories she shared. I didn't understand why Rita was considered responsible for the crimes of her abusive ex-partner.

Funny, sad, real
This book caught me off guard. It’s a warmly written, but nonetheless grounded story of human experiences, told from the therapist’s couch. Some of it is extremely sad, although I laughed out loud enough to offset the times it had me sobbing into the washing up. The narrator is also very good - she could have written it herself. One to listen to if you like, or need, a bit of introspection.

We read this book for our book club and at first I didn’t think it would be my thing. However I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book, the stories were very heartwarming and you couldn’t help but get sucked into their lives and it didn’t feel too ‘self helpy’. A Bit Too American For Me
Went on a bit too long I thought. Some bits were quite touching but I found myself thinking 'Oh for goodness sake!' a lot of the time' Why is everyone in USA so obsessed with working & their career instead of concentrating on the things that matter. I found the phrase 'dead end jobs' quite insulting and also the obsession with designer babies & George Clooney, very unhealthy in my opinion.

One of the best books i have ever read
This book had me laughing, sobbing, smiling, screaming. It was amazing, and written so well. It makes you reflect on your own experiences and just tells the story so well that you don't even realise you are doing it. It is humorous and leaves you wanting to continue without ever having to stop!

I feel on the fence with this one
I thought there were some good insights at times. But I also found it self-indulgent. I started to feel a bit sick of the main character halfway through. I felt myself willing her to stop thinking and start living, and not tell me about every inch of it.

What a wonderful book
Laugh out loud, cry out loud, I loved this book and it's insight into the human psyche and journey I feel like I came to know and feel for the people whose stories are told. There are so many important life messages and guidance in this book to help us all lead a more meaningful life

amazing
absolutely loved it. It's a look inside the real lives of people and their problems and vulnerabilities. It teachers you about freedom and strength and gives you a sense of control over the narrative of our lives. Incredibley well written and told. Loved each character and journey they embarked on.

I laughed, I cried & loved every minute.
Rarely can I binge listen/read a book in 3 days but I did with Lori's vulnerable, honest memoir. I normally prefer authors to narrate their own books, however Brittany did an amazing job. Thank you for the laughs, tears and raw honesty. This will remain one of my favourite books to explain what an amazing journey of self-discovery therapy can be!
