Publisher's Summary

Ever wonder what your therapist is really thinking? Now you can find out...a hilarious, thought-provoking and surprising new book that takes us behind the scenes of a therapist's world.

Meet Lori Gottlieb, an insightful and compassionate therapist whose clients present with all kinds of problems. There’s the struggling new parents; the older woman who feels she has nothing to live for; the self-destructive young alcoholic; and the terminally ill 35-year-old newlywed.

And there’s John, a narcissistic television producer, who frankly just seems to be a bit of a jerk. Over the course of a year, they all make progress. But Gottlieb is not just a therapist - she’s also a patient who's on a journey of her own.

Interspersed with the stories of her clients are her own therapy sessions, as Gottlieb goes in search of the hidden roots of a devastating and life-changing event.

Personal, revealing, funny and wise, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone opens a rare window onto a world that is most often bound by secrecy, offering an illuminating tour of a profoundly private process.

Good Book with terrible narrator

Good that story is very good and keeps you engaged. Narrator is terrible. keeps reminding me of Ross from friends. Giving stress on some words and breaking sentence unnecessarily.

Enjoyed listening to this

Can a book about therapy and therapist become therapy for the listener? It did. I listened to it during the Covid19 pandemic. I was going through the agony of a different sort, thanks to the lockdown. Glad I chose to listen to Lori's story. Brittany Pressley is a fine narrator.

A slow start but definitely worth the time

I didn't know which direction this book was headed in when I started listening but it turned out to be a heart touching ride as I read along. There are many different stories here and some are bound to connect with you deeply.

Also, the narration is great. I went through the entire book at 1x speed and never felt like speeding it up.

Therapy 101

I enjoyed the way the book is constructed- chapters on clients and self in therapy. For anyone who wonders what a psychologist does and some of the tools used this is a great book!

Very interesting mix

This book was self help mixed in with what seemed like a story. I really enjoyed this book and I feel a bit sad that it’s over. I really liked the narrator.

Insight into psychological therapy and people’s thought processes

I can always tell if a book have a profound impact on me when I wake up in the middle of the night and think about the book. (I’ve stumbled upon this book at exactly the right time and I might even listen to it again in future.) I loved the way in which this book made me reflect on my own emotional perspective of my life but also gave me insight into other people’s thought processes and struggles. Al of us have insecurities. (It can almost serve as a sort of self-help book but in a fictional format.) Loved it!

A pass

I didn’t like this book. I found it quite boring and lacking in depth overall and verging on cringeworthy in parts. The author tries so hard that it was difficult to listen to at times. The overacting of the narration didn’t help. Given the subject I expected something interesting and insightful but it wasn’t either.

Insightful, powerful, normal and highly enjoyable

As a counsellor I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, both the account of giving and receiving counselling. I kept thinking of clients I wanted to recommend it to, so you certainly don't have to be in the profession to get lots out of it - it's an account of life struggles and triumphs, existentialism and endings. It'll certainly give you personal insight.
It's also written in an easy to follow way and isn't full of counselling lingo or terminology and is fully geared towards ordinary people, going about life wondering what the meaning of it all.

Listen! Listen now!

I adore this book and will come back to it again in the future. I cared about what happened to every character, and it was peppered with non-preachy wisdom too. At times, deeply emotional and, at others, beautifully funny! The narrator also seemed very real, like this was believably her book, her words. Perfect listen for me as a trainee counsellor, and I imagine a great many people would love it.

fascinating and complicated

Not being familiar with the author, I expected this to be lightweight and amusing. turns out it is fascinating and deep but not light and really, too serious to be entertainment. the subjects discussed are some of the heaviest known to humans and are somehow approached with love. worthwhile but emotionally gruelling.

One of the best books!

Loved this book so much. I picked it because of my interest into psychology as a psychology masters student and I must say it may me want to consider becoming a therapist. The book really gets you into the story, you can't wait to know more. Would listen again!

Wow!

Just wow! What can I say, I enjoyed listening to this book so much!! I am so sad it's over, how can I listen to anything else now? I love how all the separate stories told in this book come together, I love how listening to other people's therapy made me think about what would my therapy be like. it made me realise that as human we have to face so many struggles, we never know what the next person is going through. So let's be kind and maybe.... we should talk to somebody?

Hilarious and accessible

What a joy to follow Lori’s work w Wendell and see her journey reflected in the work she does w her patients as well. I loved her irreverent, warm descriptions and have a greater appreciation for the work that therapists do. I took lots of notes. So informative. So fun. My book club is going to read it next on my glowing recommendation

I loved this so much!

I can’t rate this enough. I loved every minute of listening to it. I never got bored or lost interest and I didn’t want it to end. I think I might listen again I loved it that much. I’ve recommended it to so many people. Life affirming, made me think about others more compassionately and myself. It isn’t a self help book as such, but I think everyone will get something from it.

Intricately written

This book is wonderfully presented, by the therapist, who we also learn is human.

It’s funny and sad and thoughtful and well narrated.

Verrrrryyy long story

Read a review that said they were sick of the story teller half way through and that kind of resonated with me. Although a great story and a useful tool for self reflection I found myself struggling to get through the last few hours even with its relevance

One of the best books i have ever read

This book had me laughing, sobbing, smiling, screaming. It was amazing, and written so well. It makes you reflect on your own experiences and just tells the story so well that you don't even realise you are doing it. It is humorous and leaves you wanting to continue without ever having to stop!

I feel on the fence with this one

I thought there were some good insights at times. But I also found it self-indulgent. I started to feel a bit sick of the main character halfway through. I felt myself willing her to stop thinking and start living, and not tell me about every inch of it.

Couldn't put it down

I never found myself listening just to finish the book I always listened with intent. I often get bored in the middle of books but because there were so many storylines it was engaging for my brain to recall the information we already knew about the people in question.
