Story
Detective fiction has never lacked devoted fans. The undying popularity of Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot vouch for that fact. In the early thirties, a detective by the name of Byomkesh Bakshi made an unobtrusive entry into the world of Bengali fiction. He preferred calling himself a satyanneshi, a seeker of truth, and within days was a household name, courtesy his cerebral skills and the exciting situations he found himself in. In the tradition of Doyle and Christie, Byomkesh is accompanied on his adventures by his friend, Ajit, slightly obtuse and the perfect foil to him.

Poirot is always interesting
As this is dramatised, I had a hard time getting to know who is who. There are so many characters and we are deprived of their description or sensibility. We only get when somebody speaks and it is difficult to keep track of who is talking. Anyways poirot keeps this interesting..

Delightful
I have always loved listening to John Moffat as Hercule Poirot. I grew up listening to these dramatizations; and, I still find myself listening to this over and over again. Even when I know who did it, it is still fun to go back and listen for missed clues in these masterful performances. Agatha Christie was the queen of mystery; and, John Moffat brought Poirot to life in a way only he could. I just hope everyone can fall in love with these the way I have.

Too much loud, irritating music. Grates on nerves
The before and after music is extremely loud and even that I would ordinarily enjoy is totally out of place. Probably an hour on the book is devoted to discussion of actors and music.

Standout performances and stories
What a wonderful discovery these were! Both this and the first set of BBC radio dramatisations have been well worth the listen with really great voice performances and sound effects where needed. The stories themselves are well written as you would expect with good twists to keep you engaged. John Moffat really is the perfect Poirot.

Fantastic, but why not compiled in broadcast order?
Whilst you don’t need to listen to Agatha Christie’s ‘Poirot’ particularly in any set order, I do wonder why these two collections have been organised so randomly. Is there any reason to their order? It isn’t in book or broadcast order. The first set contain the better stories and are more recently dramatised.
[Book number - Year published] Name [Date broadcast by BBC]
Poirot’s Finest Cases:
[13 1936] The ABC Murders [BBC 2000]
[31 1953] After the Funeral [BBC 1999]
[17 1937] Death on the Nile [BBC 1997]
[04 1926] The Murder of Roger Ackroyd [BBC 1987]
[10 1934] Murder on the Orient Express [BBC 1992]
[01 1920] The Mysterious Affair at Styles [BBC 2005]
[08 1932] Peril at End House [BBC 2000]
[11 1935] Three Act Tragedy [BBC 2002]
More of Poirot’s Finest Cases:
[24 1941] Evil Under the Sun [BBC 1998]
[22 1940] Sad Cypress [BBC 1992]
[14 1936] Murder in Mesopotamia [BBC 1994]
[09 1933] Lord Edgware Dies [BBC 1992]
[39 1969] Hallowe’en Party [BBC 1992]
[02 1923] Murder on the Links [BBC 1990]
[25 1942] Five Little pigs [BBC 1994]
Expect there will be a third, and possibly a fourth, compilation as there are a further 10 Poirot stories dramatised by BBC Radio featuring John Moffatt.
[Anybody notice the incorrect spelling of John Moffatt’s name on the ‘More’ compilation?]

Not as good as the first collection
Exciting stories, full of twists and turns. However, this selection has more of the slightly ridiculous, overblown stories. It's well worth listening he to nonetheless, especially 5 little pigs, even if just to hear Poirot say 'wee wee wee all the way home' in a deadly serious tone.
