SHORTLISTED FOR THE WELLCOME BOOK PRIZE 2019

FROM THE MAN BOOKER-SHORTLISTED AUTHOR OF EILEEN

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

It’s the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

Our narrator has many of the advantages of life: Young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate, she lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like everything else, by her inheritance. But there is a vacuum at the heart of things, and it isn’t just the loss of her parents in college, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her alleged best friend.

Blackly funny, both merciless and compassionate – dangling its legs over the ledge of 9/11 – My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a showcase for the gifts of one of America’s major young writers.

Critic Reviews

"Savage, funny, frequently on the verge of teetering into lunacy...My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a non-negotiable in your holiday carry-on this summer." (Vogue)

Not for everyone, I loved it

It is a very enjoyable read. The protagonist is hard to like, that's what makes this book so unique and fun to listen to

First 80% of the book is really well written. Bold, bawdy, hilarious.

This book is not for everyone because it’s a lot of dark humour, drug abuse, and politically incorrect statements - but it’s hilarious and intentional. The writing and narration are both superb. I thought the last 20% was a let down but overall it’s an engaging read/listen.

Sublime dark, batshit crazy, harsh yet dare I say beautiful?

Dafuq did I just read? *deep inhale*
I will have to really ponder to rate this but for now its a mixed 3.5 ⭐

I was attracted to the book like a moth to light, just because of the name and that cover (uff!). The book is definetely not everyone's cuppa joe! Those who get it will get it I guess?

"Pain is not the only touchstone for growth"

Do i like the protagonist? That's a mixed reaction. Society would probably narrate me to not like her, but I dare say she's relatable in bits and pieces, and that's the beauty of the author's writing I guess - Brash, unkind, razor-sharp, nastily depressing with some pinches of dark humour here and there, and a lot of 'wtf'! I felt the writing was intentionally monotonous in the middle to convey the lethargy, monotony and pointlesnes of it all? But then, it got progressively darker and clinically batshit crazy towards the end - numbness, hopelessness, despair at it's glory only to reach its holy epitome of absurd escapism!?

The protagonist literally said bitch life be crazy so I am gonna hibernate - and I ate it all up! The protagonist herself is jaded, selfish and emotionally dull and her version of the other characters make it all the more non-likeable. Or actually, none of the characters are indeed likeable, or relatable - but that's the point I guess? I learned a bunch of drug names which were thrown around left, right and center for the majority of the part. Honestly, it was all a haze till it ended - but then again that's what sleep is right? A trance or a bunch of dreams and nightmares, and then again so is life innit?

"There she is, a human being, diving into the unknown and she is wide awake"

That last sentence is a good take-home. Love it/ Hate it, this book is definitely one of its kind.

interesting

My year of rest and relaxation is about a woman. She’s young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate, works an easy job at an art gallery, and also rich. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn’t just her relationship, or her best friend, Reva, or even the loss of her parents,. It’s the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

A very interesting take on mental health and how it affects everyone differently. Not much happens in terms of story or there isn't much to write home about the characters even, but there was never a dull moment with this one. Witty, funny in a dark humor sort of way and very well written. Although take what happens in the book in jest only, for your own good.

Pain isn't the only touchstone to success

A refined description of the human psyche and admission of self will and constant reinvention of one's self to be alive, awake, and arisen.
