A Tour de Force on Every Level

I saw this show live countless times in Los Angeles, and not only is Dennis Paoli's marvelous text done full justice in this live audio recording of a Halloween night performance in a Massachusetts theater, and not only is Stuart Gordon's superb direction captured with sensitive fidelity, but Jeffrey Combs has continued to deepen and hone his truly amazing portrayal of Poe at the end of his emotional and psychological rope. Certainly the attentive, expressive, and wildly appreciative audience is clearly witnessing a theatrical experience they won't soon forget! The only shame is that this tour de force performance could not have been captured on video as well as audio. But far better this beautifully mastered sonic gem should exist than to rob posterity of this rare distillation of lightning-in-a-whiskey-flask that is 'Nevermore'. Bravo to all involved!
