Rossano è una delle città più importanti della Calabria sotto il dominio bizantino e qui si è conservato uno dei monumenti più significativi di quell'epoca: l'Oratorio di San Marco, fondato nei sec. X-XI.
Durante il restauro sono emersi frammenti di sculture ammirevoli e resti di affreschi del periodo bizantino: una Madonna col Bambino, che doveva essere parte di una rappresentazione molto più estesa.
