About this listen
This Jane Austen classic is an amusing story of love and life, laughter and destiny. The story centres around one Mr. Bennett, a henpecked English gentleman who lives in Herfortshire with his wife and five daughters. All the daughters, while having very distinct manners and natures to one other, are happily living with their parents in the town house. The issue, however, is that if Mr. Bennett dies then a distant cousin stands to inherit the house.
For the sake of security and prosperity of the family, a plan to marry away the daughters into rich families therefore comes into fruition. Soon a wealthy bachelor, Mr. Bingley, along with his friend, Mr. Darcy, moves into a house nearby, and the merry-go-round of courtship and marriage begins. This is a classic for all ages and a compulsory listen for anyone to lighten up their day.

Honestly, the story truly holds up to its reputation. As the title suggests, it’s all about pride and prejudice. And for someone like me who’s new to historical fiction (Bridgerton being the only exception so far!), this turned out to be a truly riveting experience.
Beyond the historical drama, the story delves deep into the class divisions of that era—highlighting even the tiniest of social restrictions. And the way Austen presents it makes it clear where she stands on those matters.
The characters were an absolute delight. I especially loved how Elizabeth and Darcy were written. Even though this book was written in the early 19th century, the enemies-to-lovers vibe was spot on!
Now, coming to the narration—this was only my second audiobook. The first one I tried had the narrator speaking in an old English accent and at a faster pace, which made it really difficult to follow—especially since the book was written in the 1800s and the language itself felt a bit heavy. But in this version, Mona Shetty’s narration was much easier to grasp. She had a clear, steady pace and made the story feel accessible—even though it still takes a few chapters to adjust to the classic style of writing.
There’s a reason I chose not to rate this book—and the fact that it’s a classic is reason enough!
Overall, Pride and Prejudice absolutely upheld its reputation. And I’m definitely going to get myself a physical copy—because this book has truly charmed me!
