About this listen

‘Pyre glows with as much power as [One Part Woman] did, and adds immeasurable value to contemporary Indian literature’—The Hindu

Saroja and Kumaresan are in love. After a hasty wedding, they arrive in Kumaresan’s village, harboring a dangerous secret: their marriage is an inter-caste one, likely to upset the village elders should they get to know of it. Kumaresan is naively confident that all will be well. But nothing is further from the truth. Despite the strident denials of the young couple, the villagers strongly suspect that Saroja must belong to a different caste. It is only a matter of time before their suspicions harden into certainty and, outraged, they set about exacting their revenge.

A devastating tale of innocent young love pitted against chilling savagery, Pyre conjures a terrifying vision of intolerance.

The story is an evergreen one. The young son moves to the city in search of work, falls in love with a woman outside the community and the following troubles... But the beauty is in Murugan's ability to capture the times (probably late 1970s) with the touch of the soil. Also, he is such an empathetic writer that he captures the plight of the women so well.

Masterful story woven around an ubiquitous evil in our society. Opposing emotions juxtaposed in this heartwrenching yet ennobling tale

Caste trumps love

This story showcases the dirty practise of following caste in our country which makes humans worse than animals. Perumal's writing fantastically encapsulates the evil society we live in where a woman is considered the second citizen and powerless. This book reminded me of Pranay and Amrutha's sad story happened in Telangana state in 2019, where Pranay became a prey to honour killing.

I had a chance to read the book and now thanks to Audible for giving an opportunity to review the story in the audio format that will have a lasting impact.

Highly recommended for serious fiction readers and absolutely not for teenagers and people who say caste doesn't exist!

Realistic and heartwrenching

In Madhoru Bagan , Perumal Murugan took up the social tyranny of a childless couple, and in Pyre it is the caste trap that makes animals out of men. Gut wrenching reality
