Publisher's Summary

When an elderly woman is shot in what appears to be a tragic accident, Shetland detective Jimmy Perez is called to investigate the mystery.

The sparse landscape and the emptiness of the sea have bred a fierce and secretive people. As Jimmy looks to the islanders for answers, he finds instead two feuding families whose envy, greed and bitterness have lasted generations. Then there's another murder and, as the spring weather shrouds the island in claustrophobic mists, Jimmy must dig up old secrets to stop a new killer from striking again....

Splendid

Joy - the Kenny Blyth narrated version was released just as I was ready for it. plot not quite as good as the previous two in the series, but tidied up neatly and credibly. As always, informative about the history and way of life in the Shetlands.

Much poorer than later books

Having read several books from this series, I suspect I have read them in the wrong order, and therefore The author was getting going with this book. Very poor by comparison to much later books.

Unrealistic and dull

Having enjoyed the previous books in the series I was surprised at how dull this one was. There was tediously obvious misdirection and the direction of the investigation just didn’t feel believable. Disappointing.

Red Bones

An excellent Ann Cleves detective story very well read. London accents not as good as the Scottish ones, but all very listenable. I recommend it thoroughly.

Riveting in so many ways

Having watched 'Shetland' on TV, and liking other AC books, I thought I'd give this a try. I really enjoyed it, helped by a masterful performance from Kenny Blyth. Characters well-drawn. Background impeccable. Twisty but completely believable plot. Just downloaded Shetland 1 as a result. Highly recommended.

Good, gripping, atmospheric

Another fabulous shetland novel. Love the archeology and murder mix. Kept guessing until the end but perhaps my only complaint is I felt like it ended very suddenly and the explanation not as shocking as if hoped. The narrator is very good, lovely accent. I will definitely be continuing the series.

Just Great, better than book 2

Really enjoyed it, Kenny Blyth is excellent, and the story had great twists and surprises.
