Story
On a warm July evening in 1985, a middle-aged man stood on the pavement of a busy avenue in the heart of Moscow, holding a plastic carrier bag. In his grey suit and tie, he looked like any other Soviet citizen. The bag alone was mildly conspicuous, printed with the red logo of Safeway, the British supermarket.

Story
In this landmark audiobook, David Epstein shows that the way to excel is by sampling widely, gaining a breadth of experiences, taking detours, experimenting relentlessly, juggling many interests - in other words, by developing range. Studying the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors and scientists, Epstein discovered that in most fields - especially those that are complex and unpredictable - generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. They are also more creative, more agile and able to make connections their more specialized peers can’t see.

Surprisingly riviting
The story might sound like something only an MBA would want to read, but it is much more compelling and taught than any business book. There is also much to be learned about the legal and legislative systems of several countries, but Browder is not lecturing, he is discovering and bringing us along. Overall, well-written and well-read. Reading the book in 2021, however, a new epilogue is needed. The Magnitsky Act was central to the Trump presidency. Even before inauguration, Trump signaled to Russia that he wanted to kill the Magnitsky Act. The infamous Trump Tower meeting was very much about Magnitsky, and the Senator that Trump hated most was John McCain, a sponsor of the Magnitsky Act.

Riveting
I recommend this book to everyone who enjoyed Shoe Dog by Phil Knight. The story of how Bill Browder went about creating His Private Fund Investment firm is riveting. The latter part of the book deals with the torture and murder of Mr Browder’s Tax Lawyer in Russia and his unceasing efforts to achieve justice for that murder; incredibly sad and equally riveting.

Bare with it and it will provide.
I must say that about half way through I really considered leaving this book unfinished. And only the fact that I don't usually do that made me continue. In the beginning I thouhht this guy so full of himself. The book was like an autobiography of a grown child. I did this, I dealt with that guy. He was part of a group of scavangers who did all they could to extract as much money as possible from the countries from the fallen Soviet Union. And he somehow tried to show us how bad the russians were, how loose their women were, how bad their leaders were and so on. The hipocracy was palpable. And yet, when Sergei Magnitski comes in the story picks up. From the on it was amazing, in a terrible way. The story itself is hearthbreaking and full of twists. Kudos to Browder for keeping up the fight and sticking to his beliefs that something must be done. It's worth finishing it. And it has plenty of insides of how the post-Soviet Russia operated in some areas.

Amazement, disbelief and tears
This book is one of the most interesting books I have read in a long time, and far more than just a biography. The background information about how the banking system and investment funds work is fascinating, and the insight into the Russian way of 'banking' and politics is eye-opening and downright scary. Disbelief and amazement describe this part of the book. The personal story of the author and his fight for justice for his friend, and his achievements in this fight were what made me cry on several occasions. I am glad that I bought the audible version of the book, as I particularly enjoyed listening to Bill Browder himself reading out the last chapter. It made the whole experience of the book far more personal. All in all I would say this is a must-read for anybody who is interested in our modern world of finance and politics, as it gives an insight to what goes on behind the scenes, and it also shows what one man with determination and perseverance can achieve.

Exciting, Surprising, devastating AND hopeful. A must-read. A twisted tale simply written. Style is visual without being flowery- perfect for audible. And they cast exactly the right voiceover guy . You will stop what you’re doing as you listen. Your heart starts beating faster and yet you can’t move until you find out what happens next. And because it’s true, you will cry. And then you’ll share it with a friend. Because you will want other people to know what you’ve just experienced.

Mind-blowingly shocking
An extraordinary story of courage against a corrupt regime making the author's life a nightmare. From the Panama papers book I knew that Putin had amassed a huge fortune to make himself the richest man in the world, but not the sheer extent of the corruption in Russia that encompasses the police, government officials and the legal system and the ruthless lengths that so many were (and probably still are) willing to go to cover up their fraudulent activities. It's so sad that the optimism of the late 1980s when the Berlin fell and Russian appeared to be becoming a democracy that the countries natural wealth was plundered by a few leaving the ordinary people poorer. I felt outraged by the helplessness of people trying to do the right thing and fight the corruption but were relentlessly harried, imprisoned, tortured and some killed by a state system rotten to the core that even pursued their victims in other countries as we know only too well in the UK will Russian dissidents murdered on out streets. The author ends the book with a shocking statement: that if he is murdered we'll know who did it.
What's so troubling is the helplessness of ordinary people to stop those in power if the latter as hellbent on a self-serving agenda. I used to think that this would be impossible in the UK, but I'm not so sure in the light of recent events.
The narrator does a fine job.

Absolutely amazing story. Although it is all well documented fact, it reads and plays like fiction novel. Well worth the download.

Red Notice - essential reading for everyone
Extraordinary true story of corruption, politics and the Russian psyche,
All the more horrifying as it describes events that are so recent.
So sad to see an amazing country robbed and manipulated by so many villains and the corruption going all the way from the police and prison officials to the tax office and all the way to the top.

How heartbreaking this battle is
The last few minutes in this book broke my heart, how this wonderful man never gives up on his friend is truly inspiring. I crossed checked all the facts throughout the book and could not fault the fact in this novel.
Bill Browder truly is the definition of courage - and as for Sergei Magnitsky my heart goes out to his loving family, who witnessed a man so strong and devoted to honesty, integrity and faith that he paid the ultimate price. May your fight for truth and justice never ever be forgotten. If ever you wanted to hear the other side of the story this book is it - Thank you Mr Browder you are an inspiration

A tale of two halves
Found the first half of the book fascinating but it lost me a bit towards the end. Much too much was made of the House votes and a largely symbolic gesture. Still an interesting story that needed to be told though.

A Story Of Courage That Needs To Be Told
If someone had told me that a book about high finance, the stock market and the Russian economy was going to be interesting, I would have yawned and looked the other way. But I didn't - and I'm very glad I didn't! This is an incredible true story, one which vividly exposes the corruption and violence of modern day Russia, and specifically concentrates on the murder by the Russian authorities of an innocent lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky. The author, Bill Browder, a close friend of Magnitsky, carries the reader from his earliest days as an up-and-coming businessman to his transformation as a human rights activist, for which the murder of his friend was the catalyst. The courage and bravery of Browder, Magnitsky and the others who worked to expose the corruption is evident, particularly in their stance against the tyrannical Russian President, Vladimir Putin. It's a story that needs to be told and it continues to this day.
