Bad

Full of EXTREME Prejudices and racism. did not like the story too, which was very predictable..Only motivation for finishing it was to prove myself wrong and get something out of it.. but won't advice anyone to try it.

A fun radio drama that’s well worth a credit!

This is not a book; it’s an original audio drama, acted with a full cast and effects. As an avid lover of the original Sherlock Holmes stories (I’ve read them all several times), I’m always excited and a bit nervous about new works that use the characters. This was worth the gamble: the characters feel true to Conan-Doyle’s vision, the story is full of intrigue and twists, and the ending ties everything up perfectly. Holmes fans will enjoy this one!

This is not an audiobook.

This is an audio performance. It reminds me of old-school radio serials. Where you are given sound effects and a full cast, but the only narrative exposition comes from the dialogue. This unfortunately leads to character lines that are overly engineered to let the listener know what is happening. Which I just couldn't get into.

The voice acting seems quite good actually. I also believe the story had some potential. This format is just not for me.

Not really a Holmes book

Hate it when authors market books as being Holmes books when he's just an ancillary character in the book. Whole chapters where Holmes is irrelevant to the developments. Disappointing.

Ouch!

I only lasted about an hour. I probably would have slogged through the unidentifiable voices and the confusing jumpy plotline, and even the wholly inaccurate word usage (lots of modern phrases and words and swear words that would never come out of people of that station in Victorian England.) I also felt like the portrayal of Holmes was untrue.

But I wear headphones, at a decent level, to listen to my books. And there were these awful sound effects that were at a frequency that literally hurt my eardrum. It sounds like a gong and it signifies the beginning and end of flashbacks. Every once in a while it was fine, but about an hour into the book, the performance was jumping back and forth, with the present actors speaking about a past event, and that past event being acted out every few seconds within the dialogue of the present. So just as my ear pain would stop, here comes another. It was like swimming in waves - every time you come up for breath there's another one looming!

So if you have hearing or sensory issues (or are wearing headphones) beware this recording!

Well performed, badly written

The best I can say for this is that at least it was free. It’s well performed, but the authors don’t seem to know what goes into a successful radio play. The dialogue was both cheesy and confusing. The sound effects were distracting. And it feels as if they had a passing idea of who Holmes and Watson were from popular culture, but never bothered studying the source material to get characterization right. All in all, a disappointment.

Keep looking

This is the worst SH book I have ever read / listened to. The only thing it has in common with Conan Doyle's work is that it has characters named Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. That's it. Nothing else comes close. If you are looking for
a Sherlock Holmes book. Keep looking. The only good thing about this book is that it didn't cost me a credit.

This is not a Holmes story. It is tedious play badly acted with misshapen characterizations. So bad could get more than two hours in

Not a worthwhile addition to Holmes inspire cannon

Story is boring and predictable as well as being wandering and confused. Performance is over produced and over rought. I finished it, but not happily, just out of principle. Don't bother-really. Conan Doyle is rolling in his grave.

Poor performance killed this dead for me

I like the idea of the plot, but I'm afraid the performance was really poor, with the Dr Watson character particularly so wooden he made it sound like a comedy skit! I've no idea how the plot would have turned out... 10 minutes in, I couldn't persevere any longer. I am requesting a refund on this one I'm afraid.

Too many voices sound the same!! Too confusing.

Usually love Holmes stories and usually Audible originals are a good bet, but with this one there are far too many voices that sound the same and it’s far too difficult to follow who is saying what. Almost as if it’s been directed by someone used to TV not audible. Even KH-S couldn’t save this for me, and I think he’s one of the best readers for audible books.

Sadly very weak

I nearly gave up early on but as a fan of Holmes of nearly 60 years I listened on.
It’s a weak plot with modern morals mixed in which Holmes wouldn’t have recognised. This is a commercial product trading on a name it’s not worthy of. If you are a fan of the original books and stories this is not for you

SADLY MISCAST

I listen to Audible products every single day. In addition, I am both a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes & of Audible original dramas - there have been some that are absolutely superb.. But, oh dear - not this. The key essence of any audio production is the casting & this is woefully adrift. I have no idea behind the thinking, but Dr Watson is acted so woodenly, and so out of character, that it has a very detrimental effect on the overall production. Mrs. Hudson is written as an absolute cliche. Another serious issue is that too many of the characters sound exactly the same, so that the listener is left thinking 'who is this speaking'? Plus, it needs editing. Too many scenes are too long, too played-out and it drags the overall pace down to a crawl. I was so looking forward to this production, too, which makes it all the more disappointing. This could have been really great.

Stick with the original Doyle.

A trite , hackneyed tale that was annoying and overly simplistic. Every time I returned to listen it reset to the beginning.
Waste of money and time.
